Just Quit Smoking...

Sign in to disble this ad
I put the pack down on Wednesday, been clean since. Only had one night where I felt like I was going crazy for a fix.

I started taking bupropion hcl a week before I officially quit, and it sorta made the smokes not all that satisfying. I don't feel all that different yet, but my taste buds seem to have kicked in to high gear, and my wife stinks to high heaven now (she still smokes).

Anyhow, figured I'd share my triumph with you guys.

Good job man! My older brother just quit smoking a few months ago. He said if you can get past the first week or two, you're golden.

Just keep at it... and if you haven't started already, start working out. Just like going on walks and stuff. It will return a lot of your energy.

Congrats (quit 3 years ago). It's hard, but doable. I still think about one now and then, but it's at really odd times (not the ones you might expect) and so infrequent that I couldn't tell you the last time it happened. I don't miss them and can't stand the smell now. It's much worse to me than before I smoked.

Been 4 years for me. Best advice I can give you is:

A. Take it one day at a time. One hour at a time. One minute at a time.
B. Don't beat yourself up if you go back to smoking. It's a tough addiction to beat. I tried many times before I finally quit. Best thing I ever did, bar none!
C. No ashtray-diving! If you see a half-smoked butt in an ashtray then leave it alone! Just walk on by. This was my biggest problem in earlier quit attempts.
D. Just think of all the money you're saving and all the tax revenue you're denying the government!

Good luck. Quitting cigarettes is the best thing you'll ever do!

Yes!!!! Good move. I will admit to falling of the wagon after about an year after I initially quit but after a month of smoking 2 or 3 a day (not packs) I'm back on it.

I didn't find quitting (either time) really all that hard. You just have to make up your mind that you aren't going to smoke and find something constructive to do with your down time.

Every time I get the urge, I pick up my Dean EAB and start playing scales.

Also, every day, I've put the six and a half dollars I would have spent on smokes in a pot. It'll be used as a reward, to buy me a new Schecter J.

I need help quitting. You know, I've got very strong will power for just about anything I can think of but when it comes to trying to quit, zip.

I don't over eat, drink maybe a six pack a year, have no credit card debt and I haven't touch pot since 1988. (Never was that into it anyway. Makes ya stupid).

Been to the doctor, tried this pill and tried that patch. Tried limitimg myself and have tried quitting cold turkey. Longest I went without was about 3 weeks. Turned into the biggest jerk imaginable.

I remind myself of the health risks, I've seen horrible pictures of cancer victims and the cost for a pack is insane these days.

I'm rock steady for everything except for quitting smoking.

Gang, I'm at a loss over how to quit and I need help. Suggestions?

Good for you.

I first quit December 14, 2008. I picked it back up in May of 2010. Bad decision and I'm smoking more now than I have in the past.

I've got 1 pack left in the carton I bought. I'm going to do my hardest to make that my last pack. I only smoke about 5 a day (up to 10 on bad days). However, I'll be working in a middle school in the Fall, so I really don't want/need to have Nicotine cravings and irritability around those kids.

The key is different for everyone, so the most important thing is to keep trying. Took me maybe 10 times. In the end, what got me through was a combination of Alan Carr's books for mental prep and chewing nicotine gum, tapering from the strong ones to the medium ones to regular chewing gum over a three month period (even though Carr advises against nicotine replacement).

I also bought a $400 bottle of whisky and said "well, now you've got to quit for three months to pay for this damned thing"

That might work for you, but if not, keep trying and taking it one day at a time. Eventually you'll get there.

There may be smoking cessation groups in your area. Check with your local hospitals or the American Cancer Society. And don't beat yourself up for failing to quit. I tried and failed many times before I finally quit for good. Just keep trying, and like I said maybe you need a little more help than others. Absolutely no shame in that!

there are none....you'll quit when you are ready to quit.....relying on patches, gums, hypnotism,is addict behaviour......but if yuo do make up your min d to quit i found that 2 things help.....tell no one you are quitting.....if you are offered a cigarette plead a sore throat or something, because believe it or not there are still people out there that see yopur failure as validation......

do not tie quitting to anything else,ie. "if i dont go for a beer i won't smoke".....etc...sets up an excuse,"oh well i had that beer, ergo i failed so i may as well smoke"..if you cannot quit with a full pack of cigarettes in your pocket you cannot quit.....cigarettes are everywhere ....you still have to live your life, you just have to learn to do it without cigarettes

I would share my mentor's speech against smoking, but seeing as you've already quit, I will give my full support for you in your endeavor.

My grand mother quit and when she wanted a smoke, she would chew the nic gum and suck on a straw. She will still grab a straw once in a while to this day, but she smoked for 40 years so she had a pretty good force of habit built in.

I just paid ten bucks for a pack of smokes (and it wasn't even my brand!).

Good job quitting, but please don't turn into one of the rabid anti-smokers.

I quit in 1978 after smoking for 29 years and smoking a pack a day or more for the last ten years I smoked. Actually, it was the easiest thing I ever did. I just changed the program. But I wanted to quit and never went thru any craziness because I was really ready in my mind. I had one episode of weakness when I was drunk where I wanted a cigarette about a month after I quit. I did buy a pack, put one in my mouth, lit it and took a drag... BIG MISTAKE!!!! When I inhaled my lungs completely freaked out. It felt like somebody kicking me in the chest. Thru the butt down and stomped it out and thru the rest of the pack away. Haven't smoked at all since.
Three days after I quit I could taste things better and smell things way better as well. In about a month I got my wind back pretty much. And some say it takes about 5 years for your lungs to clear but I don't know about that. Quitting smoking is one of the most single important things you can do to insure that your health will be better and that you'll feel so much better. Not to mention having a LOT more money in your pocket. And that buys more bass gear....lol You can do it but you really have to want to or it'll never happen. Good Luck and hang in there. )-(

Rabid anti-smokers have their reasons

I'm pretty anti-tobacco, but I respect other's rights. Enjoy your smokes, just don't exhale in mah face.

Join a gym and start working out, it is a great thing to add to the quitting smoking.
