Sympatico's just a bad company.

XD

Seriously, though, cable is often faster than DSL, BUT, it all depends on where you live.

If everyone and their dog uses cable in your neighbourhood, you can bet your sorry butt that the cable's going to be slow as frack while DSL will stay the same speed.

DSL speed is, more or less, based on two things:

1) what service you buy

2) your distance to the nearest hub

If you live right next to one of your ISP's hubs, DSL is going to be so fast and consistent in said speed that it isn't even funny.

Also, even though your download is 7x faster, your upload is goign to limit you so badly it's not even funny (it'll still be quite a bit faster, just not as much as it should be).

People are shocked when I show them how much of an effect upload has on their internet speed (if you're using 3/4 of your upload, you basically cannot surf the internet... it's kinda ridiculous).

Also, while it's not advertised with my ISP (MTS, a DSL provider), I can hit download speeds approaching 1MB/s (8M, or 8Mb/s) (note: only on speed tests, haha; realistically, it's usually about half that). Upload's only 40kB/s (320m, or 320kb/s), though, which is beyond pitiful.

i think we may be switching from direcway to roadrunner... currently my average DL speed is somewhere around 20kbps, on good days at 100kbps, and for gaming the lag is nasty.

plus it goes with weather, and they have something called the "Fair Access Policy" where if your internet is fast enough that you dl over 100mb per day (done it 3 times!) then they will shut you down to near 1kbps for 24 hours (they say its due to the shared bandwith, and if you get the more expensive packages then it is faster and has a higher FAP threshold)
