...Just tryin' to sell a bunk bed! CL content

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I posted an ad on CL locally for a Broyhill bunk bed that my kids used after being potty trained 'cause we were having the house remodeled and they had to share a bedroom for 6-8 months while the construction took place.

I get the ususal 'bid against thyself' requests and just poorly worded replies that I respond to with: The bunkbed is still available price is; $***.**. It is available to view most weeknights & weekends.

Then I get this inquiry:

Hello
Thanks for the prompt response,I have read your ad well,I am really Interested in purchasing the bunk bed,The price is okay by me,I will like to bring it to your notice that payment will be via Cashiers or Certified bank check since I am not presently around to view it ,and I believe what I am buying from you is in good condition so I want to secure the purchase to avoid loosing the it and my mover will be at your location for pick up after you have received and confirmed payment,if this is okay by you, please do provide me with the below information to facilitate mailing the payment to you so as to have this transaction completed ASAP
Full Name.............................................. ...........................
Address where payment will be sent to not p.o.box............
City.............................................. ....................................
State............................................. ....................................
Zip Code.............................................. ............................
Cell Number............................................ .........................
Hope to read from you soon......................

N.B.......PICK UP WILL BE ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE RECIEVED PAYMENT

Why all the stinkin' financial gymnastics here? Just send someone over and decide if you want the bed!

Yup, scamola...

Impressive though, they're getting better, they'll mention the actual product now, rather than just "your item" or "the product" etc...

wow that is the MOST typical craigslist scam..if you read the HOW TO AVOID SCAMS ON CRAIGSLIST section of craigslist you would see its top of the things to disregard list. they are fishing for email accounts or will sell the personal info if you respond and actually give up that info with creditors, bill collectors, telemarketers ect.

really read about scams before you use a service that opens up potential to be scammed on

I too wonder why folks would go for such an arcane method of payment for a garage sale item unless they were trying to pull some scam.

I just wanted to share. You can't even sell second hand stuff without folks wanting to scam you.

I posted my 82 Wagoneer on the CL and got similar BS and a myriad of whackos Emailing me. For every 15 or so people that make arrangements to come see it, 1 shows up, usually with not nearly enough money wanting to negotiate

Shut up, Username.

Aaron, about once a week, we get this exact same thread. You ought to run a search for craigslist scams here in OT and in other forums, you'll see a ton of the exact same email.

What's strange...in a good way is one person who contacted me came by, looked at the beds and paid what I was asking...cash...no questions!

So for now, I have resolved that issue.

The scammer gets points for actually mentioning the item, but then goes and loses them for failing to ask for the OP's bank account number!

I was expecting to read something about a scammer, but then when he actually mentioned the bunk bed, I thought it could be legit. When he got into the whole cashier's check and pickup thing I knew it was a scam.

I tried to sell a $70 case on Craigslist for $40 (IIRC.) once, and got an email from some dude that wanted the item for his shop out of the country, and was willing to pay $50 extra to arrange for his shipping company to come and pick it up.

So I totally made $90 on a $70 case, and all I had to do was give him my bank info!
