Kayak anyone?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just wondering if any TB'ers are into kayaking. I've always been into it but I'e never actually owned one. Just been a renter. Well, I've finally decided that I want to buy one so I can go more often. But I live in a tiny apartment. So against my better judgement, it's got me thinking inflatable.
My purposes would be touring more than anything. Anyone have any experiences with infltables? Specificaly, I'm looking at a Sea Eagle that I found locally. The guy swears it's just as good as a hard shell, but he's also hoping I will buy it. So I'm looking for unbiased opinions.
Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

I've had fun on kayaks. I've played with them in 10 foot surf, Kayaked in Japan around the Izu peninsula, catalina, the big island of Hawaii Cooks Point, San Diego, Laguna. I have always wanted to kayak down some rapids. Never done that. Looks really fun.

I have kayaked before, but casual river stuff, never any hardcore rapid / jump off waterfall stuff.

I think my sister has four of them, and is selling off her extras. I asked if she was going to have as many as I have basses (8). She said no, the storage room gets rather extensive. (She lives near Puyallup, WA where she has access to rivers, Puget Sound and the coast.)

Puyallup is a great town. I used to live there. Do you know how she likes hers? Any problems with them at all?
I've never even been in an inflatable. I'm really kinda worried about buying one because I don't know how well the material will hold up. Though as I said, I'll just be touring mostly; I'm prone to paddling several miles/hours out into the middle of nothing. So it would suck to spring a leak when I'm five miles off shore.

We have a couple of wooden kayaks that I built for my wife and my self. They are sea kayaks - designed to straight and fast. And they are a blast.

I got the plans, kits, and materials from Chesapeake Light Crafts. Highly recommended:

Ours are the Chesapeake model:

I've always wanted to try my hand at building one of those. I dont' have the space for it at the moment though since I live in an apartment. But if i ever move into another house, I think I'm going to give it a try.
I bit the bullet earlier and bought the sea eagle. I figure if it really sucks and is unusable, I'm only out $280. I hate to lose that much money but in all honesty, that won't make or break me. I really prefer a hard shell but in my tiny apartment it just isn't feasible.
I figure the sea eagle has to be descent though sicne it's rated at a max weight of 500lbs. That's pretty good considering most hardshells can't hold that much. We'll see...

I'd really like to get the kind that you can bounce off boulders and fly down waterfalls with. That looks so fun.

I've never gone over a waterfall but I've done plenty of whitewater kayaking. It's crazy fun.

My sister doesn't have any inflatables - she has both fiberglas and wood models. I believe the wood ones are ocean-going kayaks.
