Ken Smith and customer service ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone,

I just have an experience with the Ken Smith customer service, I have one KS burner da5, and one pot in the electronic is broken. I ask for the customer service to pay for a new one, it seems to be 10$ but they ask me 100 $ for shipping !
I'm in France

I'm not sure it's really fair, I bought a lot of time some musical stuff in USA and never pay 100$ for a pot. For strings I pay 5$, so I don't think a pot weight more.

sorry for my english...

Maybe they thought you'd send the whole bass to be repaired.

That would make sense.

Besides, why go through Smith if you just need a pot?

Now I'm curious. What's so special about this pot?

If the bass is under warranty, you won't be able to warranty repair yourself!

What is the pot you are looking for (value and taper), chances are someone can find you one off the shelf.

Looks like the pot is intergrated into the board. Ken will send you that circuit but he wont pay for overseas shipping. It's all about the money.

But what are the values of the pot? What is it's resistance and taper (and shaft size)?

If you are sure that it's the pot that is at fault? It'll be a 100K pot of some variety. You could desolder it from the preamp and find someone with a multimeter, sketch out the taper.

But as you don't sound 100% confident with electronics, it's probably easier biting the bullet and paying for the entire replacement.

Ah, I see now.

FWIW, a regular pot of the correct value (100k Ohm, I suspect) connected with wire to the PCB will also work.

as you can see on the first picture, it's broken, so I just need a new one to solder on the board

So you aren't talking of the one that is the center of the later pictures you took?

What are the values of the one that broke off, and does it just look the same as the one in the other picture?

Also, have you soldered before?

There's already a thread about this in the correct forum (Pickups and Electronics), and this one doesn't belong in OT.

Thread closed.
