Kentucky Derby 136th -- Jerome A. Keel
Saturday a little after 6:25 p.m. (give or take a few minutes), the greatest 120 seconds in sports takes place in Louisville Ky.—the 136th Kentucky Derby, the annual Run for the Roses. It’s a chance to be a part of history and watch the winner join all the other great horses that have won this special race. The Derby is the hardest of the Triple crown races to win: It doesn’t always go to the best horse, but rather to the one with the most luck and the one that gets the best trip. A lot of strange twists have come to pass in earlier running of the race. All you can do in the end is hope that the Derby gods smile down on your horse and guide it into the winner’s circle, where it can have his or her picture taken with the champion’s roses draped around it’s neck.
Let’s take a look at some of the top contenders for this year’s race.
# 16- Awesome Act: Had all kinds of trouble in the Wood Memorial. Stumbled out of the gate and lost a shoe and still finished third. He also was coming off a leg infection. I think he’ll run big on Derby day. He has a great turn off foot. If he stays out of trouble he’ll be there at the finish.
# 17- Dublin: Nice colt but does not posses the killer instinct He’s always running at the end but just won’t go on and win. A good bet to hit the board in the exotics. Has worked well over the track. He also has D. Wayne Lukas in his corner.
# 1- Looking At Lucky: Will become the favorite with Eskendereya out of the race. Is the type of horse that any trainer would love to have in the stable. He loves to run and win. He’s overcome trouble in his races that he’s worn blinkers in. He’ll need that in the Derby. In the Derby the blinkers will come off. He has taken to the Churchill racecourse, with two great workouts.
# 20- Sidney’s Candy: This colt can run other runner’s into defeat. I don’t think he has to be on the lead to win. Had a good work over the track. The Derby will be his first race on a regular dirt track. He’s won four out of six lifetime starts. He can motor, in the Santa Anita Derby he came home in: 35:2 that’s racehorse time.
#4- Super Saver: Out of all the horses that Pletcher has he Can improve with a return to Churchill. He won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes as a two-year old at this track. He HAS BEEN TRAINING GREAT AND LOOKIN SUPER DOING IT.
I’m going to list a few long shot’s that should be very huge odds. They could make for a big payoff in the trifecta or superfecta.
# 2- Ice Box: He’s won twice-going nine furlongs. Should be rolling in the stretch will have to over all the traffic. Has Nick Zito as his trainer.
#14- Mission Impazible: He’s another closer. Ran only one bad race in five starts.
# 3- Nobel’s Promise: His last start is a throw out. The Arkansas Derby had all kinds of trouble. Runs his race every start.
# 10- Paddy O’ Prado: Finished second, in last start. Improving colt.
