Kevin Garnett calls an opponent a "cancer patient."

Par for the course for trash talk or did he cross a line? Discuss.

KG (like almost any of us) has been touched in life by cancer. I doubt it was said like that and in that context but I wasn't there and neither was the media apparently.

Hopefully it was miscommunication.

It was probably because Villanueva has alopecia universalis, which causes hair loss. No hair on his head, eyebrows, etc. My son played soccer with a kid who had that condition. They were only 8 years old at the time. I saw the kid about 12 years later in an airport. He still had the condition. Great kid, and a great soccer player. I always felt a bit sorry for him though because kids can be very cruel.

You're right, Bipslapper - none of us were there. But just going by the article, it sounds like a bush league crack to me.

Yep. Stay tuned for "The Decision 2", where Stern decides to punish KG or not.

i'm 50/50 on whether it actually happened or not. the way KG barks all game long i wouldn't put it past him. then again, maybe CV got his butt handed to him on the court, and in the heat of a tough basketball game his emotions twisted someone's words.

either way it's basically hearsay and there's no way KG gets fined.

Agreed.

But when has that stopped some folks from making a determination?

What's hilarious is saying you don't know if the story is true and then acting like you know it is from that point on. Any excuse to whip out the old baggage.

I'm not privy to the trash that Garnett talks, is he worse than Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Dennis Rodman, etc.?

If Garnett did exactly what was said and was trying to get in this guy's head... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Way to fall for it. Duh. And then go on Twitter, the electronic version of "Dear Diary...".

Sorry, that's funny. CV makes plenty of money, he can pay the fine. Pop him. No ring necessary.

I don't know....I can't really imagine KG saying in the heat of the game,

"You know, you're a cancer to your team, and to the NBA as a whole; fye upon you! Fye!" Really???? who says that??? And why would anyone fix their mouths to say that to Charile Villanueva?

Sounds and smells an awful lot like some dribble a PR agent would put out "And yeah! This will also make you look good in the eyes of the public; they'll know that you're a team player, and that you won't stand for divas like Villanueva who are a cancer on their teams!"

As far as Garnett as a trash talker, it's been said that since high school, he's always been that way, and always said things that make people want to fight him.

In answer to the OP, if it's true that KG said "You look like a cancer patient," it's par for the course for KG IMO, which is crossing the line for most people.

Statement from the Celtics:

“I am aware there was a major miscommunication regarding something I said on the court last night," Garnett said in a statement from his representatives released by the Celtics. "My comment to Charlie Villanueva was in fact, ‘You are cancerous to your team and our league.’ I would never be insensitive to the brave struggle that cancer patients endure. I have lost loved ones to this deadly disease and have a family member currently undergoing treatment. I would never say anything that distasteful. The game of life is far bigger than the game of basketball.”

Man, at least come up with something good

I lol'd hard at that.
"Yea I'll say that I saw your mom selling your little sister on the corner to score a little smack, and that I saw your daddy with an 11 year old thai boy, I'd never be THAT disrespectful that I'd say you looked like a cancer patient."

I think the point he was trying to make was that he wouldn't disrespect cancer patients in general by calling Villanueva one.
He made no excuses for slamming Villanueva himself by calling him a hideous disease that eats away at his team.

is it too much to ask that pro-athletes display a modicum of class when dealing with things like rivalries, disagreements, etc.? Or do they all have to act like grossly overpaid babies?

Maybe they should hug it out; Charlie Villanueva needs to seek help from Stuart Smalley.

The point he was trying to make is clear, but do you really think KG, in the heat of the moment, said "You are a cancer to your team and to the league?"
