Due to a case of the swine flu being diagnosed at my daughter's school, they began educating the children on what symptoms to look out for and that they should be reported immediately. This was too much information for my daughter.
This morning, my 6 year old daughter woke up and ran down the list of what was wrong with her and why she couldn't go to school. We suspected she was faking but weren't sure. She then went on to inform us that anyone reporting these symptoms to the teacher would be sent home immediately, essentially threatening us.
After a prolonged investigation, I caught her in the lie and brought her to school 45 minutes late.
At noon, my wife got a call from the school saying our daughter was screaming in the cafeteria that she was allergic to fish sticks and that they could not be put on her plate.
Now, I'm of the opinion that fish sticks border on cruel and unusual punishment, but when you fake sick and cause everyone to run 45 minutes late, you don't get a homemade lunch.
All totalled, her antics this week alone (the first full week of school) have cost her 2 points on her final conduct grade and gotten us a conference with the teacher.
We went through this at the beginning of last year (and through every stage of the first 6 years of her life). She tests the system to find the week points. It's amusing as hell when there are no consequences. Frustrating as hell when it's time to reign her in.
That's about all. I've been laughing about the creativity of this all day at work. Now I have to go home and see if the inmates have started lighting the toilet paper.

And yes, he is every bit exploitative that you make your daughter out to be. His mother, who could discipline a little better, almost lets the child run free, within boundries. She's pregnant right now with her second child. He knows just what he can and can't get away with when it comes to his mother and my girlfriend (who have lived together for the last 2 years). Being that Im relatively new still (about 6 months) he doesnt know exactly how far he can push the line yet. Being that Im not his parent, I dont feel appropriate disciplining the young lad but I do my best to try and teach him proper behavior. He's due to start preschool soon, so that may or may not whip him into shape.

But often kids like her end up becoming really successful and energetic because of their precociousness (if thats the word)
My kids are all grown up now...I miss those days surprisingly enough.
You'll have to draw boundaries with her I suspect.
I had to laugh at her tricky little cafeteria antics.

Last night she and her sister were playing very loudly after I had asked them to pick up their rooms. I walked quietly up to make sure I caught them in the act to unplug any possible defense plea. While watching them giggle and throw stuff from the half closed door, I tapped my foot once. The 6 year old (without realizing I was right there and without missing a beat) immediately stopped playing, screamed at her sister for keeping her from cleaning, grabbed the nearest toy and put it away.
I've got no doubt she's framed her sister like this before, I just couldn't prove it.

The smarter they are, the more they'll do it - and they get good at it. Let them know YOU know what they're doing.
When they get a bit older, keep them as busy as possible. Get them into any sport, require them to play an instrument, and get them into 4-H, Girl Scouts or other activities. I have learned that the best insurance against kids getting a step TOO far out of bounds while experimenting is to keep them very, very busy. It will keep you busy too as the chauffeur, but it pays off by keeping them headed in constructive directions. One of the very few "thou shalt" commands I laid on our kids was that when they hit Jr. High, they WOULD learn to play an instrument. I didn't care which one, but that was a requirement...and I know it has enriched their lives, even though neither one is pursuing it actively now.
The only times our kids got out of line as teens was if we let them have too much spare time on their hands. Fortunately, both played competitive team softball and school softball starting in Jr. High, and that made a big difference. Highly recommend it!

It's frustrating that she is so dedicated to stubbornness and the desire to defy authority seemingly for its own sake that she often sabotages herself more than anyone else in the process.
She was such an angel until she hit age 10. I guess her plan was to lure her mom and me into a false sense of security . . . . and then, POW!
