Killing defenseless animals (do musicians hunt?)

Since I am in the process of moving, I have a limited amount of time to return to my home state of Maine this month for one of the best reasons to be in New England in fall. I am referring of course to rifle season, which opened last Saturday. I will probably only get out during the most crowded weekends due to my work and moving schedule, and thus doubt I will get the opportunity to put a little green tag on Bambi this year. So as I tend to do when I get bummed about something, I am turning to talkbass OT.

Is anyone else getting skunked on hunting this year? Anyone have an amusing hunting story that I can read while cooped up in my office and not out freezing in the woods hoping I get back before my wife wakes up? Does anyone want to gloat about all the success they are having while I gaze at my gun cabinet knowing my rifle will remain unused this season? How about some cool pictures? (obviously not gory ones, some people don't dig that sort of thing)

Hunting comes up fairly infrequently around here, but it's all I can think about since I am not doing it right now.

I am not a huge deer hunting guy, but gimme my Browning Sporting Over/Under shottie and I'll go after fowl for days on end. I <3 my shotgun.

My sights are always set for wife-poon. No moral objections to killing cute little furry critters(as long as you eat it or otherwise make use of it), I'm simply a wuss.

rockstar, I too am getting into the bird thing. I got a chance to go after some upland birds with my buddy this last weekend and it was a a blast, although my succes rate was less than spectacular. I learned a lot about feildcraft though, and I tell ya, upland is not only more difficult that I imagined, I have never been more startled by jumping game in my life than seeing a woodcock light off at about 30 mph 4 feet off the ground right at my feet.

I'm hoping to go after some duck next year, but with waterfowl there is a pile of regulations to remember and it can get tricky.

bassteban, nothing gets the old lady going like coming home covered in deer blood, cover scents and mud.

I don't hunt, but I anticipate my annual portion of Bambi from my father. Turkey if he's lucky, too

And yes he is a musician so it counts.

I had an oportunity at a beautiful tom this week, but A: he was roosted and B: they are out of season for shotgun. I tell you where I'll be next year though, they are freakin' everywhere in that area and it's right in my best friend's back yard. Candians get some awesome hunting opportunities as well (although probably not in Toronto proper).

Haha yeah it's really fun when you get a group out there with some dogs also. Just gotta watch where ya point and shoot!!

When a quail pops out of the shrubs 5 ft in front of you and flies straight left, gotta make sure and not to pull the trigger too close to your party or the dogs!

I haven't been in a while here but need to set something up soon. My dad last year took a week-long vacay to Argentina for a 5-star duck hunt and lodging setup (paid for by a big client of course) and said it was just awesome. You can shoot hundreds of shells a day and there's still so many ducks you can't even count.

Oh I remember reading about an Argentina guided duck hunt a few years ago and was jealous as hell! They showed pictures of literally piles of ducks from a days hunt. I'm happy to be allowed 4 birds a day. I'd rather go do that than a dnagerous game safari to be honest, although something about shooting at a cape buffalo from the ground with a rifle whose bore is bigger than my 12 guage does sound somewhat interesting.

Niagara region is where my old man lives and hunts. He has 13 acres backing onto a huge forest, so the property is ripe with game. They even have photos of a day when about 40 wild turkeys were ravaging their bird feeders. I'm talking like, 10 feet from the back door.

I have about 24 females and one big male turkey currently living on my property.

I have been thinking of putting some feed out for them to keep them around and then just bonking one over the head for a good meal.

yep sounds liek my place.

we also have deer, fox, partridge, bear, coyote and fishers on my property.

oh, and cows across the road... but I think the farmer migth get angry if I get one of them

I used to hunt, but I have to get up early every morning. I'm just not into it on my off time. I play in a band with a Vet that hunts every chance he gets.

I have only recently gotten into deer myself, I was always into small game and a big fisherman. Deer, bear, moose and turkey all intrigued me, but I was scared to get into it mostly because of the money. I finally got sick of being a spectator or scouting/tracking with my friends and decided hell, if I'm gonna do all the work I might as well start shooting at them.

I have a good friend from upstate NY and the hunting out there is phenomenal. I'd love to go around niagara and take a look around.

No deer season for me this year. The band has me busy, and there's a trip to DC in there somewhere as well.

I have a buddy with ten acres below the rifle line (Shot guns and pistols only in the more heavily populated southern half of the lower peninsula). He's got an awesome deer condo on the swamp behind his place. I may get out there for a day or two and see if I get lucky with my .44.

I am in ottawa, which is like 40 minutes from upstate new york, you can come shoot a deer on my property but I have a toll of a coupel of venison roasts

Jonyak, if I had time to go to Ottawa I could probably go to Maine even easier

Still sounds like a nice proposition. I'd even go 50/50 on meat as long as you're willing to help out on the butchering

Phalex, do you do a lot of pistol hunting? I have a friend who hunts with a Contender (few different calibers) and he insists it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but sounds pretty tough.

A family member is a gunsmith (the business he worked for decommissioned one of Hussain's gold plated handguns and Lady Diana's ladies pistol), so I've been around guns a bit, but not in a hunting foray.

I'll be getting a nice bow next year for something new to try, I'd like to get on top of that thing, one rule though, if I kill it, then I must eat it.

It's easier than bow hunting IME. I have iron sights on my Blackhawk, and it's the best gun for the heavy brush that I own.
