My oldest brother's friend (whom I know fairly well) is 25, or 26 I can't remember, right? It weird to see it but, he's married, has a 5 year old child, and is a highschool history teacher. I remember when he was like 16, I saw him a year or so back at a dinner party and he sat and made jokes and talked about music. I look on his facebook wall and his students are on there debating with him over stuff and calling him Mr., Sir ect. Its insane, the more I think about it the crazier it is.
It seems like it wasn't long ago when he was how old I am now.
It seriously blows my mind. Anyone else have experiences close to this? |

Ain't no WAY I would be friends with my students on Facebook though! Then again my students are 9 and 10 so they shouldn't be on there anyway. I won't accept friend requests from their parents either.

bc | That's only out of their fear-based respect that stems from their knowing that bc=tQ.

I made a joke about it on one of his pics on FB (it was him and my brother sipping on beers, it was a while beck) and he was like "Yes, I've moved up in the world". |

bc | I've got a lot of friends on Facebook who are ex-students of mine (kids at the time, now grown up).

To me, I'm just a kid starting off at the bottom floor. Sir is reserved for old men, and Mr. Lyons is my dad. I've always just been Tim and if anything strays from that... I'm not sure how to take it.

He is employed full-time at the highschool and replaced my favorite teacher ever. Kinda odd seeing a close personal friend getting ready to teach full time. I remember just a few years ago, he was a sophomore in college and giving me advice on applications, and dealing with college departments.

My mom's a fourth grade teacher, and I've always gone and helped out in her classroom a lot, since even before I was in the fourth grade myself. The past couple years, she's started having the kids call me "Mr. Piner."
I'm not ready for that. At all.

bc | Brad, I can certainly understand that and would be a little leery of FB "friending" any of my current students, even though they're adults. But it's nice to stay in touch with folks whom I taught as 11-18 year olds and who are now well into their 20s/30s. Occasionally they find me on FB and send me a friend request, just for old times' sake, and I don't see any problem with it if they're good sorts and I'd like to hear how they're doing (this is true of the great majority). They seem comfortable calling me Bill now instead of "Sir", and that suits me just fine.
One of the rewarding things about being a teacher is finding out how the kids you taught have turned out. I've had the occasional reason to seriously despair, unsurprisingly, but most of them are great folks.
One of my close collleagues, now in his mid-thirties, is an ex-pupil of mine. As Mr. Darkstrike says above, the train rolls on...

It speaks well of them when they use "Sir" or "Ma'am" where/when it is called for. Note to English pickers: I did not end the last sentence with a preposition. The "called for" is a compound adjective meaning "appropriate" or "needed".

I'll be 46 in two weeks. It really doesn't feel any different than when I was 14, playing bass at a CYO dance. I still hate being called "Sir", unless it's by some kid chasing one of my daughters, and I hate being called Mr. Del Turco even more. |
