To be honest, they kite surf in the same strong winds during the fall and winter months and have similar wrecks. The hurricane probably didn't have that much to do with it. The harness is SUPPOSED to quickly unhook

It would be awesome if you really padded yourself up and did it.

Yes. Saying that he busted his ass would be an understatement!! It wasn't the flying across the beach and the street that hurt, it was smashing into the side of the bulding at 40mph Could have been worse.

There was a chick that offed herself here last year, at Kanaha I think. From what I heard, she just took off, and kept going, and ended up dumping herself way out.

A few years ago someone got killed in Corpus Christi. They slammed into a bridge.

A lot of those kitemares do happen where people get really hyped about rare high wind conditions. Out here (where high winds are very frequent) most guys don't go out with kites on the really big days...or at least they migrate to a less windy spot. But apparently some kitesurfing outfit was actually running a demo promotion that day at or near where that footage was shot!

My favorite kitemare story involved an Aussie who flew six blocks inland from the launch site and went through his neighbor's roof. He broke a few ribs but was otherwise OK. The little old lady neighbor was around 90, I think. So when she was interviewed, it went like this:

"He was such a nice young man, I was always inviting him to drop in for tea. But this was not exactly what I had in mind!"

Edit: Here's one of my alltime favorite kitesurfing vids.

Yup, I didn't get to see it. Darn, missed another chance to shake my head at my fellow Floridians. (I'm a native, but I bet he's a transplant.)

+1

I watched it for the the first when I was at work this morning and I was laughing *almost* uncontrollably at this guys misfortune. I turned to the next guy and said "have you seen this" and someone else replied with a concerned sounding "yes, he's in critical condition ". It didn't make me stop laughing. If he didn't fly it in a hurricane he might have tried it in a lightning storm. He should consider himself lucky.
