Land Sharks?

Sign in to disble this ad
It appears along with the water, the snakes, and the crocodiles, Australian flood victims have something else to contend with. Bull sharks have been seen swimming inland around shopping centers on city streets. Another old 70's SNL prophecy comes true.

Quote:
Flood victims in Australia have a new danger to contend with -- sharks swimming down their streets, according to a report in The Queensland Times.

Bull sharks have been observed swimming past a McDonald's restaurant, past a butcher's shop, and around other places in Goodna, a suburb of the city of Ipswich, Australia.

"It’s definitely a first for Goodna, to have a shark in the main street," Paul Tully, Ipswich councilor for the Goodna region, said in the Queensland Times report.

Sharks Can Be Identified By Their Bite Marks

Bull sharks are known for their unpredictable and often aggressive behavior, so their presence in populated areas is a concern. They are the third most likely shark to attack humans, according to NOAA Fisheries. Several fatal unprovoked attacks in the United States alone have occurred over the years.

Seriously, everyone in Queensland is paranoid about Bullsharks. From the day I moved up (from white pointer territory no less) I was told all about how dangerous these bullsharks are and how they are everywhere in the water up here.

I've seen 1 in 4 years, and my job includes being in the water several days a week. Afaik there have been about 5 attacks from bullsharks ever.

From what I hear they can tolerate a very high amount of freshwater for a long time. I know on the East coast of the US there have been Bull shark attacks recorded forty miles from the salt on a couple of river systems.

Are their any TB'ers effected by this, I know we have quite a few members in Australia?

Bull sharks are nasty. We have them around here from time to time but they usually stay farther out. In 1916, there were a crazy series of attacks on the shoreline and in Matawan which is much inland. The last few attacks were in fresh water. google: "matawan maneater"

It's what gave the inspiration for Peter Benchley's "Jaws".

To any Aussie TBers - I hope that you're weathering this ok!

Anyone see a business opportunity with a shark swimming by the butcher shop?

Now why would a tailor be swimming past a butcher shop - and where's the business opportunity in that?!...

Ahhh, the sharks are freeloaders. The only money they carry is in their stomachs--whatever their most recent lunch had in his or her pockets; they're quite tight with their bucks.
