Landlords of hell

I should write a song about this.

I am about to move to a new place. Have not signed a lease, but landlord told me he approved my application and to go ahead to arrange moving.

So I arranged a moving company.

Then he told me go ahead and arrange painting, if I wanted.

So I arranged to get painted a room and kitchen, only walls.

I go to craigslist and I see the same exact apartment being listed...what the hell?

I speak to the landlord. He says it must have been one of those realtors...Although the posting listed his name and number.

Then he argues why I am not painting the ceiling or the whole apartment...I mean the landlord is not putting a dime on painting and is basically instructing me to paint out of my pocket.

Then he goes about how I have to put protective covers inside the cabinets, I have to buy rugs to put on wooden floor, how I cannot wire comcast cable to another room that doesn't have cable.

I am about to loose it with this guy. I wonder if he scared away his previous tenants.

Move in, don't sign anything and trash the place.

When the cops / debt collectors come looking for you say you are somebody else.

He's a conman.

You haven't signed a rental/lease agreement. Stop contacting him now. Don't move or do anything else. Run away from him as fast as you can, even if you lose money. IME, you will have nothing but headaches from him.

Everything you do must be in writing prior to moving or painting. Btw, the landlord should be painting the apartment not you. Seems like he's getting people unfamiliar with residential rentals to do his work for him.

FWIW, in a previous life a was involved in managing/maintaining residential rental properties for over 25 years. I did it the right way. It's actually easier in the long run.

Not that I've lived in 10 billions places throughout my life, but I've had pretty good experiences with my landlords. However, I remember moving to go to grad school and the first landlord I spoke to threw up major PITA signals. He owned a realty company and the office was right next to his home. The apartment was up above his personal garage. The guy was obsessed with making sure I "wasn't going to party," even after I told him three *&#$(@ times I was a grad student, not some freshman looking to get his drink on six nights a week. It was obvious the guy would have been up my ass all of the time. I was constantly gigging at the time, and I'm sure unloading my equipment at 3:30 in the morning would have been an issue. It was a decent apartment, but I obviously passed. There's always another apartment down the road.

I agree with Stumbo. This guy seems shady, not to mention a huge pain. I'd walk.
