I've seen people using terms which I don't understand such as:

:eyebrows:

Ect...

What do the : either side of word mean?

The colon people type either side of a word is meant to insert a smiley icon (as you have done).

When it works, you get the smiley. When it doesn't work, it's because people have failed to insert a legitimate smiley. :irony:

"ect" actually means "et cetera" and not necessary an abbreviation for ectoplasm or something like that. It's used by many members as an abbreviation of the abbreviation "etc"

Also, for reference, most TB smilies do not appear as such on the TB iPhone app. They just appear as :randomword: whatever word between colons. So if duder OP is on the iPhone, that's the confusion.

I've grown rather fond of the smug, hipster-esque, self-referential feigned ignorance displayed by some users on other forums where they intentionally put the random word between colons
