laptops with matte screens

Seems like most laptops except business ones come with those glossy screens. I have been using an HP 8430 that has a sharp, matte display but I need a replacement, so I was trying to round up laptops in the 15inch screen that is matte/non-glossy.

I just got a new one and I can't imagine what they were thinking with that glossy business. It's horrible.

Why did they go to this?

I think my screen is glossy on my macbook. It's not that bad, but I rather go matte.

Most computer's I looked at have the option, and if not, it can't hurt to shoot off an email to ask if they offer it.

My 17" MacBook Pro has it. When I bought mine, the 17" was the only one that offered the matte screen as an option, but it might be available on the 15" models now too.

My Toshiba originally had a gloss screen. When I broke the screen (way too easily), I replaced it with a matte one. Cost me under $90 for the part and was a very easy install.

Again...WHY DID THEY INTRODUCE GLOSSY SCREENS?

I'm really curious. What technical purpose does it serve?

I think its marketing over tech. Obviously, a glossy screen is sparkly and shiny, and people love that. Forget the glare and easy scratching.

I just bought a new macbook pro for my girlfriend, and I like my slightly older matte screen one better.

I think it may have been introduced as a way of appealing to people who must watch everything in HD, as a marketing ploy. The screen is glossy, so your HD looks that much 'sharper' kind of thing.

It's exactly that. But in general, everything today is in HD. And widescreen.

And...what genius decided that a 16:9 aspect ratio is acceptable for doing actual computer work?

That's so efftarded I can't believe it.

Try to find a normal computer monitor these days.

Fortunately, my office has one, but the laptop and the studio dual monitors are 16:9, which is about as useless as can be for running recording software, which is really vertically-oriented.

so I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels about this. So far, the business line of HP like the old NC series and some of the new elitebooks come in matte. I also used Dell before and their Latitude models have matte screens also. Macbook Pros 15" have matte as a $150 option I think

I'd personally MUCH rather a glossy screen. My Gateway FX laptop has an incredible screen!

I also prefer the 16:9 ratio over the old-school square ratios. I thought they sucked, personally.

WHY? Do you like looking at yourself in the mirror when you're trying to work?

I have the same monitor as yours and that's the effect I get if I'm not working in a dark environment.

WHY?

You realize that this is just to accommodate HD video format, don't you?

I also suspect that a so-called 19" monitor in 16:9 actually has fewer square inches of viewing area than a 19" in a more nearly square aspect ration -- and if so, there's the answer: Consumer deception.

Welp, I think the glossy screen greatly improves the overall contrast and black levels as well as the overall vividness of the picture.

RE: the ratio, I am a novice gamer and many games are developed with that as the native ratio, plus I watch movies on that system pretty often.

I do believe Acer laptops as well as Asus laptops have matte screens.

Acer makes Gateway and my Gateway laptop definitely has the gloss screen...in "Toy & Entertainment" 16:9 aspect ratio.

not true. wider aspect ratios are much easier on the eyes. they make dealing with large spreadsheets a whole #$%^ of a lot easier.

and gaming in widescreen aspect ratios is a lot more natural.

personally, at work, my laptop is displaying to a pair of 19" 1280x1024 monitors. desktop is on a single 17", but i usually just use that to remote into when i am at a branch and have to mess with AD, SCCM, or our ticketing system.

at home, i have a 22" widescreen on my desktop, and my HTPC is pumping 1920x1080 on a 37" tv.

-----------------

as for the OP - i would recommend a dell latitude. my 6410 with the nvidia graphics chip is quite nice. bit pricey though.

I can't see ANY basis for that assertion.

It's hell for everything I use a computer for -- which doesn't include games or video.

It's particularly horrible for recording, which needs a tall vertical spread for multiple tracking. It's bad for viewing online forums or running a mail client. It increases scrolling for everything, and scrolling is death.

And it is smaller in terms of area over a more square-aspect monitor of the same "class" which is what all this is really all about: Less monitor for the money within a "class."
