LCD TV Question...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

A coworker just offered me a sweet deal on a Samsung 40" LCD TV. Model LN-T4071F. It's a fewyears older, but it's 1080P, 120Hz, etc. It's a good tv, and in great shape, except....

A line goes perfectly horizontally across the screen. It's several pixels thick and black. On the left side of the screen, it sometimes glows other colors depending what's on the screen, and doesn't seem to be as "sharp" of a line (blurred edges) on the left. On the right, it's very crisp and totally black. He gave me the set for $100! I figure even if the panel is shot it will work nicely for my "play" room, where my basses, amps, computer, etc. are.

Check out the pics below. If there are any TV guys or other cats in the know here, I'd love your opinion(s).

Thanks in advance!!!!

Your new TV is rebelling against playing DMB.

That's a good sign, it means the TV isn't a douchebag DMB fan!

This just reinforces my idea of starting a company that hires out goony guys to come into your home and threaten malfunctioning electronics and appliances with physical violence. If the threats don't get the offending bits of technology to shape up, then the physical violence becomes manifest, with serious ass-whuppin's being delivered until the issues are resolved. Swearing loudly would be highly encouraged.

The line isn't as obvious as the pics make it look. I took a bunch and picked the few where it really looked prominent.

Any idea what's causing that line. If the panel is shot, or if it's something more easiliy fixable. Sheesh!

It was either Trevorus or tplyons who posted a link way back on how to clear up dead pixels on an LCD screen. I used to have the link bookmarked, but it got wiped out when I moved to Win7.

Try this: http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-a-Stuck-P...an-LCD-Monitor

A guess would be a cold solder joint on one of the line driver chips. If it were mine I would pop it open and do a real good visual inspection of all the components under magnification. If you got lucky you might be able to find something obvious. If you don't see anything you could try the poke around method, especially connectors, while watching the screen for any changes. Who knows you might get lucky. Please use standard precautions when working with anything that has line voltage lurking around. Although LCDs do not have high-voltage transformers like older TVs they still have 110 inside.

Thanks guys. Like I said, for $100 it's well worth it to me even if it stays busted. It's not in my living room, as I already have a great one in there. I was hoping to put in on the wall in my bedroom, but if I can't get that line out of there, I'll toss it in my play room.

Like I said, the line is not as noticeable as in the pics. It def. looks worse in those pictures.

Make sure nothing dodgy is burned into the screen when it's turned off

There is a faint image burned in of my guitarist hacking my TB page, actually.

As a 2nd or 3rd TV in the house, and for $100, it's worth it (IMO). If it was to be your primary unit, no way in hell.
