Leg cramps

Sign in to disble this ad
For the longest time now I've gotten leg cramps at night while sleeping. They are excruciatingly painful, and thank God they don't happen often. It's mostly my right calf, but on occasion the left cramps up. I curl my leg up to my butt, grunt and groan in agony for about a minute, then it releases and I get blessed relief. I wind up waking the wife and dog, but I can't help it. Then my lower leg is sore for about a day. It's agony, I tell ya!

Anyone else get them? Any solutions?

Drinking enough water during the day might help.

If your calf cramps, point your foot in line with your leg, then bring it back to the more natural 90 degree angle (basically flexing your calf) Should clear it up straight away

Cramps could be caused by a few things, lack of fluids, possible vitamin or mineral deficiency. Either that or the lack of excersise of the muscles?

Muscle cramps are often the result of low electrolytes or dehydration, commonly related to physical exertion and not replacing lost fluids.

Cramps in the calf muscles, especially at night while sleeping, can be caused by other medical conditions, many related to lack of exercise and/or poor circulation.

Try drinking more water, springwater that has natural minerals in it.

Do you get the cramps when you're not sleeping?

I’ve been taking a magnesium, potassium, and calcium supplement before bed and my chronic leg stiffness is subsiding. I’m sleeping a lot better too.

Multi vitamins and a banana a day weren’t helping me but the supplement before bed definitely seems to.

I’m also drinking plenty of water and stretching regularly.

A couple of days ago I woke up at 5:30AM to go to work. Almost immediately I got a leg cramp on my right calf. Not as painful as usual, but it was surprising to me since I always get them while sleeping. To the best of my knowledge it was the first time I got a leg cramp while awake.

If you can resist curling your leg up, and extend it fully the cramp should go away within second. At least that has always been the way it works for me.

There's a doctor who writes an advice column in the Memphis newspaper. Many people who suffer with leg cramps while sleeping have written in extolling the effectiveness of placing a bar of soap near your feet under the covers.

I know - it sounds crazy. But I'm just passing on the info. People who have suffered for years write in saying how this actually works. And the doctor has said that he has literally received hundreds of testimonials as to it's effectiveness. Anyway, crazy or not, it might be worth a shot. It's free, so what have ya' got to lose?!

Ditto. There is the odd occasion where I get a cramp in my calf and I straighten my leg out and keep the foot 90 degrees with respect to the leg. Hurts for a tiny bit then it subsides. This only happens at most a handful of times a year. The last time I can remember is 4 months ago.

I get them from time to time as well...in my calf muscles...and they hurt like hell...

The fastest way I've found to get rid of them is to stand up and start walking them out..

Also I agree with everyone about drinking more water and getting potassium in your diet...

Tums is like an instant cramp reliever. Keep some of these nearby or take one before you go to sleep.
