It shows just how sad it was that she could claim to be mixed race from another country and possibly be accepted while demanding that she be recognized as the American she was limited her career.
It is also interesting to note that when she married a white man, she went to France to do it, and kept the marriage secret for three years. If she were a young starlet now, men of all colors would be lined up for a crack at marrying her!
