Ok so here's the deal....
I had long hair for approximatly 2 years up until this past August. Somewhere around a year ago i started to notice that the hair at the front center of my head was getting weaker and thinner. I wore my hair tied back 99% of the time when it was long so i figured i damaged the roots somehow since there was always a constant pull on that area.
Well, needless to say I bit the bullet and finally cut my hair off due to fear that i might cause more damage by continuing to wear it like I did before. I figured now since there was no more pressure on my hair maybe the area would thicken out again. Nowadays i just slick my hair back and keep it kind of shaggy. The weakened area is still thinned out and now I am coming to the realization that this will be a long term problem..perhaps it will only worsen with time.
Now, I know alot of it is tied in with genetics(And i don't have the best genes judging by my dad's side and mom's) but I am 22 years old and quite frankly, i'm just not ready to start loosing my hair yet, so I wanted to ask some of you since maybe some people here have had a similar situation(We are musicians after all so i know many of you have/had long hair).
-What products have any of you used to strengthen your hair roots?
P.S. i know Rogaine will probably come up somewhere in this discussion, but I'm not really sure if my case is severe enough to start using something like that, however its certainly not out of the question.
Thanks in advance for any/all input on this matter.
-Paul

Hair requires nutrients to grow, although the hair that we see on our heads is dead, and the scalp is well supplied with blood vessels. If you've ever cut your scalp, you know it bleeds like crazy.
I've read some theories that say its the capillaries, the smallest blood vessels, that begin to close down and then the hair follicles die (the roots). My 27 year old son just starting shaving his head because his hair had thinned out substantially. We were comparing his college grad pictures (age 22) and his current hairline and noted the remarkable change in relatively a short time.
He opted not to go for the Rogaine, etc. Good luck
(btw - the avatar is my 29 year old, I'm 59 and just beginning to thin out).

I didn't know talking about hair loss was such a taboo topic amongst musicians...but in any case you all can have my "man card" you big bad macho guys

My genetics should lead me down the path of Abe Simpson (crazy recession in my late 50's) but if I started going bald I would just hack it off right then and there. |

| | | | Just do the comb-over man. That'll make those of us who have embraced the baldness look even better.
Full flowing mane > shaved head > having a "fivehead" > hats > comb over.

Anyway....I think i'm pretty much done trying to seriously talk about it at this point. I decided to open up about a sensitive topic and obviously I wont get much input besides sarcastic jokes and some kind of "man rules" non-sense. My bad for thinking/expecting otherwise.
To those with actual helpful/genuine comments and or advice...thank you, its appreciated.

I'm the biggest beer fanatic on TB and I like guns.No way I'm gonna lose mancard points from here.
I used some products and they worked, the hairloss stopped but then I realised it's not the permament solution and was going to cost me a fortune.I saved up $1K so far for my hair transplant.I suggest you do the same.Besides,if you're not completely bald,it looks "manly" so +1 points to the mancard.

I may use *** hair for a curly look too though I haven't decided yet.

| | *******er Emeritus(does anyone remember that? No?) | | Join Date: Apr 2000 Location: Houston, Texas | | I'm also 22 and slowly thinning, so I feel your pain.
I use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. It's supposed to help keep the hair you have, and won't "regrow" any dead hairs. I assume it's working since it's slowed down the thinning dramatically. However, like both my dermatologist and hair stylist tell me - it only slightly delays the inevitable
I also use Keratase Lotion Densitive to give my hair a more thickening look.
