I don't have an internal CD or DVD drive. I rarely use it, so I got a single Sanyo Lightscribe SE-T084 that plugs in via USB. It's a slot loader because I hate the flimsy trays. It's small and easy enough to carry around - but it's dog slow. Burning CD's for rehearsal I don't bother with the lightscribe.

I researched at the other sites, PCMAG, CNET, TomsHardware, ... everything changes every few months so there's probably many better out there now.

Some inkjet printers have CD holders to print on special printable media. If you have one of those, just a regular CD/DVD burner would be fine.

Dont' bother with lightscribe, way too slow. Get a cheap Thermal disk printer like the U-Print, or just print labels on your inkjet or laser.
I was so mad on the first lightscribe disk I did, and if I can help save anyone else the trouble from the biggest hoax in cd labelling history I will.

Lightscribe came preinstalled on the laptop I got last spring. I haven't even bothered with it yet.

Not owning a printer, I like LightScribe for what little disk labeling that I do.

I bought two LG DVD-RAM GH22LP20 PATA burners in the summer of '08 (one died last Spring, the other is still going) because they were the cheapest at the time ($29.95 CND), are as reliable as any other units I've used, and because LG DVD drives have smooth-running & whisper-quiet mechanisms.

In contrast many of the other makes & models of optical drives I've used (I salvage & repair useful old PCs on a keep-the-best-and-give-the-rest-to-charity basis) are cheesy, vibrating, rattling pieces of junk.

If I ever have to buy another LightScribe burner I'll first do some research aimed at finding one whose firmware can be updated via Ubuntu.

LightScribe Drives Comparison

I'm with you on this. I've had a few drives with Lightscribe and it's always slow and makes a fairly fuzzy almost smeared looking image. The only way it looks almost decent is if you burn it multiple times, and that takes the better part of an hour for a large label.

My computer came with it and I like it. I don't make many cds but when I do, I prefer the Lightscribe look over stickers.

When I was buying an external DVD burner for my MacBook, I opted for a model with Lightscribe because it was the same price and was a FireWire model. First of all, Lightscribe is pretty cool. Second, the discs are much more expensive, and they're not the easiest things in the world to read. I'd recommend a printer on printable media over Lightscribe any day. It's a cool technology, just really not that useful.

I used Lightscribe once and the image was very faint, could barely even see it. wasn't worth it.
My Toshiba lappie I think has a similar thing, never used it tho

I have used lightscribe frequently. I only dislike the lack of color and slow speed. I love how detailed it can get though. Some of their templates have designs and stuff to frame photos - so we have logo disks and stuff.
