A little help with hidden keyboard commands please!

Talking about the computer typing keyboard. Seems like every day my fingers accidentally land on some key combination that effs up whatever I'm doing. Is there any way to universally kill all "secret" key-combo commands on a PC? I really never use the ones I know about, and they only cause me annoyance rather than being "convenient" or helpful.

If there's no universal "kill", are there specific kills for common programs like Word or Photoshop?

The one that's making me pull my hair out right now is this thing where if I go back to edit some text, any typing I do writes over (replacing) any text in that place; while what I want is the "normal" mode where typing just adds more text in between what's already been written. I know this may be confusing, I'm having a hard time putting it into words.

Let's say this sentenc has a spelling error, and I want to edit it. Normally you'd click your mouse to the left of the error, and type that missing letter, and all's good. Instead, I end up with this:
Let's say this sentencehas a spelling error...

Grrrr!!! What's the trick for killing that mode?

...press the "insert" button. Should be in the upper right hand corner.

Sound like you hit some form of "delete" and you need to hit insert. If you want to turn off "sticky keys" and the like, then just bring up the preferences and uncheck the shortcuts next time it happens and you get the pop-up.

Hope this helps!

And tread lightly in the lower left hand corner of your keyboard. That's where all the buttons that activate most keyboard shortcuts are (e.g. CTRL, FN, ALT, Windows).

The insert button is a toggle. If you hit it once, it will cause what you're saying. Just hit it again.

It could save you a lot of time to learn these keystrokes.

Photoshop
V = move tool
M = marquee tool
T = type tool
I = eyedropper tool
Tab = show/hide palletes
Shift + F5=fill

Universal keystrokes
Cmnd + s = save
Cmnd + a = select all
Cmnd + p = print
Cmnd + c = copy
Cmnd + x = cut
Cmnd + v = paste

That's just off the top of my head. If you're on a windows machine substitute 'cmnd' with 'cntrl'

Word:
Alt F X will close a document. If you haven't saved it already, it will ask you.
Ctrl W does the same thing.

Be careful when you reach for the shift key not to press the Ctlr key.

+1. My home computer defaults to the same mode yours does. Its not annoying enough for me to find out how to force it to start "OFF", otherwise I could tell you how.

Me thinks you were too busy chatting with that same sexy asian chick to actually notice what keys you hit. It's especially difficult when you're typing with only one hand.

ALT+SPACE: Displays the main window's System menu (from the System menu, you can restore, move, resize, minimize, maximize, or close the window)
