I saw a blurb about it on my local news over the weekend. I figured it was over a soccer match.

it's bigger than that, sadly. currently clashes with police in 4 or 5 areas across the city. a few fires. transport shutting down.

There's a fairly lengthy article about it on CNN.

Pretty heavy coverage in Spain. About 5 minutes dedicated to it every newsround.
I think itīs disgraceful that people use a (mostly) justified demonstration to loot shops when they probably donīt even know what theyīre supposedly angry about.

Sounds like it's starting to kick off in my old stomping ground, Croydon. 300 hoodie-clad morons in a standoff with police, apparently...

It makes me mad every time I hear about it.

I see there's a lot of underlying social exhaustion in there, but the damage done by window breakers taking a free ride is shameful, as always.

The U.K. has more than it's fair share of disaffected youth and more than enough that will use/hijack any instance as an opportunity for what they consider 15 minutes of fame. It's sad to see this escalate into nothing more than opportunistic criminality and destruction.

Well, at least they are destroying property instead of people like that scumbag in Norway. If breaking some windows, lighting a bus on fire, and stealing a couple fancy purses gets it out of their system, so be it.

I've seen some pics... looks rough. Apparently Rockbottom, the music shop that's on the London Road there, has been looted.

i agree in that there have been no deaths (except the guy who was shot by police) - but i don't think it is a comparable situation.

nice to see The Sun taking their usual level headed approach to reporting the situation

In a way I feel sorry for the Police, they are pretty powerless these days, all they can do is restrain when inside they must feel like giving the mindless thugs a good kicking, I know I would, and if these criminals go to court they would have more rights than all of us !
If I was in authority I would unleash hell on these rioters, the ones doing the smashing and looting would come under a hail of rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons !!

^^ Agreed. It seems like they are armed with blowhorns to negotiate instead of cracking heads. Send in the LAPD crowd/riot control task force. After the first good horse hoof stomping, they'll all go home and sip tea.
