Just got back from the fast food pizza joint that my father in law owns, and that I manage. A kid held the place up at gunpoint a couple hours ago. Got $600 or $700 bucks. One of my employees was going out the back door and he was waiting with his, what looked like, walther ppk (or other small caliber weapon) drawn. Forced the guy back inside and made the manager empty the register. Unluckily, the manager was also collecting money from delivery drivers because it was the end of the night, and had a bunch of money on him, about to go to the safe.
Cops came, took DNA evidence off of the door. I came, called the security company, watched the tape. Kid held his shirt up over his face the whole time. The back door is on a magnet lock, so one of the employees had to let him out.
We went to another store today, to look at buying it, and commented about how unsafe it felt, with the customer area all open and their back door left unlocked. 3 hours later, our "safe" store gets broken into.
What a night.

3 ish years ago, I was mugged at gunpoint by a 17 year old kid with a sawed off shotgun. He put it to my head, asked for my money and cell phone, took my money and left. Someone called in an anonymous tip. SWAT busted in on the house, found the stuff he stole from me, multiple guns, ammo, drugs, and a house full of kids.
According to the paperwork I got he had been arrested 2 previous times on armed criminal action charges previously. He got off on a technicality with the warrant, and is walking the streets of my fair city.
Luckily no one was hurt. Hopefully I don't lose employees over it, but if they choose to leave, I'll understand. Insurance will cover the losses, but a $500 deductible for $700 bucks isn't really worth it.

When my father in law and I were driving back from the store, we were talking about how the invasion was way worse than the loss of money. $700 bucks isn't going to break us, but got to hate that feeling. Thank god my wife wasn't at work tonight.

I'm sure it will be uncomfortable for everyone at work for a while. You guys will probably feel the need to change some of your procedures around the shop but maybe best not discussed online. Part of me gets angry and just wants to go shoot that guy.
I was caught in the middle of a home invasion once, in broad daylight FWIW. Two guys with ski masks, a .38 Special and a .25 Auto. We all got out OK but I was totally freaked. These sort of things change the way one feels about everyday life. I had always been hyper-vigilant on the street because I grew up in the city but I was just hanging in a friends living room when someone knocked on the door. Next thing I knew all hell was breaking loose.
Best of Luck at the Shop,
S
