Hi all. In my graphic design class, we were recently given an assignment to pick a logo that we like and make changes to it six times by doing things such as changing colors and coming up with other ideas based on existing elements. I chose KLM- Royal Dutch Airlines. I'd like to post what i did so that you guys might give me a little bit of C&C.
I'll do it in two posts.
EDIT: Here is the original for a reference. http://www.villaboulevard.com/data/ban/klm%20logo.jpg
My first three are simple recolors, based on various symbols of the Netherlands.
First up is based on the Netherlands' royal coat of arms. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...1/NL_-_COA.png
Note the crown up top. Using the colors in that crown, I recolored the KLM crown, and then went on to use the same blue for the letters for consistency's sake.
Secondly, I did one using the colors of the Netherlands' flag, seen here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...flag_large.png
Third and last as far as the recolors go, I used the colors of Amsterdam's city flag, because Amsterdam is the home of KLM. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Amsterdam.svg
Whaddaya think?
More to come.

For this one, I put the full name of the airline in both Dutch and English, arched around the crown.
For this one, I took out one circle from the crown, put the KLM up there, and put the company slogan in the rectangle part.
Lastly, I simply moved and re-arranged the KLM letters to surround the crown.

I like the re-colors GG...the original blue is hideous
your second original is good. It's compact, the white on blue text works and ads character, bravo.
The first original comments: text arches only work for beer labels and round things, or if they follow some other object, they look out of place here.
Third original: whats with the circles? They have no meaning here. and it doesn't make any sense to me.
Some more tips: ITS ALL ABOUT FONTS! I never got much into logo design...I dabble, but I do primarily web design. Logo design is all about fonts which is why I'm not as good as I could be at it (in the web world we have all of about 10 fonts to choose from)....the pros will sift through massive font libraries and even alter the vectors and manipulate individual letters.
After fonts is SPACE the best logo ever made IMHO: That little arrow in the Ex is the reason they are a multinational corporation.
A logo should never have more than 3 colors (unless its supposed to be crazy like the Bahamas logo)...2 or 1 is better.
SHAPES or GRAPHICS ad both dimension and meaning.
DRAFT, THEN DRAFT, THEN DRAFT AGAIN when I make a logo I start with shades of Grey...no colors and I make like 20 versions with different fonts and positions and graphics. |

Simplicity is essential. You never put a catchphrase or something like this *in* the logo, as it may very well end on the side of a pen or the corner of a letter.
The logo must cope well with being reduced and photocopied. You're actually helping it by making it a little darker in your color choices, because a B&W copier will often pick up what is more than 50% gray in terms of luminosity. The last two color variations will work best at this.
The crown representation has a very solid feel to it, and you should probably not pierce through it or "hug" it too much with the surrounding typography. This way, I don't really like your composition variations
I'd suggest not adding information to it (the catchphrase) and playing around with the font. It should work well with a rounded font such as Avant-Garde (Century Gothic if you don't have the latter). Maybe a less stretched-out one.
This is my humble contribution to your logo design knowledge.

The only redesigned logo i like is your first one.
In the second one it isnt clear enough for me you are inspired by the dutch flag (AND IM DUTCH!), especially since you used the wrong kind of red...
Third picture, Amsterdam isn't the home of KLM, Schiphol, the airport, is the home of KLM, so I miss the connection. Again, it isnt clear you used the weapon of Amsterdam as your inspiration, since the weapon is red black red, not red black...
Fourth picture, too crowded, putting both Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij and KLM and Royal Dutch Airlines in is just too much lettering, also, KLM isn't centered in the crown...
Fifth picture, just looks awkward, and leave the slogan out. I visit Schiphol every day, and I think that if I would've asked any of the many pilots and flight attendants no one would know what the slogan from KLM is...
Sixth Picture, the splitting up of the letters seemed like a good idea, but tbh, it looks really weird that way, seems like you ran out of inspiration. Also, i think maki's right...
Again, not to bash you, just my honest opinion |
