Hey guys,
Up until recently, I've been enjoying The MacAllan 12 year single malt as my scotch whisky of choice. It's a decent drink, and I was happy to remain ignorant of the larger world of scotch whisky. Unfortunately (or fortunately), over the weekend I had the pleasure to be given a dram of Johnnie Walker Blue Label. I know, I know, it's a blend, not a single malt. Either way, it was exquisite. Of course, now The Macallan does not carry anywhere near the same quality level as it did to me a mere 3 days ago.
This leads me to my question; As much as I wish it, I cannot afford to regularly consume Johnnie Walker on any reasonable level. So, I'm looking for quality whisky somewhere in between the two, so as to enlarge my knowledge of the whisky world. The smoother the better, but please keep your suggestions in the reasonable price range (~$100 is ok, but $250 is certainly not. I choose not to drink away my savings.) Any help you can provide would be wonderful.
Cheers,
Nick

when you're ready to take it to the next level, check out Talisker / Laphroaig / Ardbeg.
not sure of the US prices but they're around 15 - 40GBP over here.

Laphroaig is my favorite, but it isn't for everyone. The Quarter Cask is pretty smooth, and the price is around 50 bucks a fifth here in Washington State.
Other Scotches I've had and liked. Auchentoshan, Glenmorangie, Oban.
Come to think of it I've never met a Scotch I hadn't liked |

also, Johnnie's Blue is one of 4 varieties they have, i believe. my dad was a johnnie fan for years, but stuck mostly to Black.

The JW Blue leans a bit in that direction so you might want to tray a few Islay malts some of which have been mentioned already. Lagavulin, Cao Ila, Laphroiag, Ardbeg and within those brands are different ages that are slightly different from one another. My first scotch was a Laphroaig 10 year and I love that flavour. For some it takes a bit of getting used to. |

I can't afford to drink it, but once you have had it, nothing else tastes quite right.
If I ever win the lottery or have a #1 hit record, one of the first tasks will be to go out and buy a dozen cases of JW Blue.
Some of the other colors are fairly close though. Maybe you could give them a try. The green label and the gold label are pretty good. The black and red are nothing to write home about, though.
P.S. My wife is not a Scotch drinker. She thinks it tastes like mildew or old socks. However, I let her sip my JW Blue. Remarkably, she loved it. That is how good this stuff is. It will convert a non-Scotch drinker. It will convert a tee-totaler. It will convert pretty much anyone.
