Looking for new sunglasses. Ideas?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want Oakleys. But.. I dont feel like I can justify spending $150+ bones on a pair. So, Im asking, what are some other companies to look into? Im willing to spend some money, so Walmart isnt an option. If Oakley is my best bet, tell me. I could try to get some used, or maybe save and buy new. But they seem like youre buying a fashion statement, more than good shades.

I have an oddly shaped head, kind of large. I have bought plenty of pairs in my lifetime, all to have been lost or too small over time. I have kept my last pair of shades for nearly a year now, and they have always hurt my head. But, I told myself if I could keep em long enough, Id upgrade.

I do lots of biking, golf, outdoor stuff, but I also want something stylish. Things I like are the Oakley Oil Rigs, and Jawbones. Im not a fan of super sporty shades, or ones that look like Paris Hilton.

Any suggestions?

Native. They're better than Oakleys plus they have a lifetime guarantee and interchangeable lenses. I've had mine for almost 7 years and they're still awesome.

I just got some of these... $100. RayBan Clubmaster. They still have some nice vintage appeal, and all the hipsters in the world arent wearing them.

I swear by the all Ti. Oakleys. They might cost a small fortune but they are almost indestructable. If needed, they can be rebuilt. I have many pairs, all with Rx lenses in them. When the frames get beat up, I can refinish them. Did I mention that I LOVE the Ti. Oakleys??

I go for cheap, as I lose them, or break them constantly.

Here's the Native Eyewear link:

http://www.nativeyewear.com/

They're not as expensive as Oakleys but they're better IMO.

Oakleys are awesome, and all the ones I have worn fit perfectly. Maybe I should just save for some. Pairs go for about $120 new, and customized, on the website. Maybe I should do that.

The Jawbones look too good to even be real.

Matt, Im checking those Natives out right now.

The Oakley line is a bit confusing. If you search for Oakley XX's you'll find several versions. They are often called Julliets Below is a photo of the serious, bomb proof frames. They come in one finish, a bare, grey bead blasted finish. They also come in two lens sizes, the larger ones being the only, functional one, IMHO. These are no longer made because of the cost of manufacturing them. Finding them on eBay is possible but they often go for $200-300 for JUST the frames. You can also find just the various parts to build them. I won't wear anything else.
My local lens shop will make lenses in any configuration for $65/pair. Going with the Oakley coating is big waste of money, IMHO.

Let me clarify a little bit, just to make it easier for suggestions.

Im looking for glasses similiar to the Oakley Jawbone. I would like to have some Gas Cans or Oil Rigs, but I want them to:

1. Be good for golf.
2. Fit with a bike helmet.
3. Not hurt my head.
4. Look good, of course.

Heres the Jawbone:

You might want to consult the British members here, those might be considered Chav glasses

American Optical. Classic aviators, built like a bank vault, $80.

I wear these and they're fantastic: http://www.aoeyewear.com/Flight_Gear/Default5.htm

If you like Oakleys, you might like these: http://www.aoeyewear.com/Alpha_Omega/default2.htm

IMHO, if I was going to buy ANY high end glasses, I would get ones that are easy to replace the lenses, as in, have large lens frame clamping screws. Ones with the tiny little screws at the earpiece hinge..........SUCK. Even if you don't wear Rx lenses, it's nice to be able to have them made, locally, in a day or so.
