Losing our jam space!

Sign in to disble this ad
So I just got the unofficial official word that the band is loosing our monthly room at the end of January. This was a BIG room in the only clean and well run spot in town. We've been through almost every space in town - most of them amateur run, so dirty but really friendly and great places. They shut down due to landlords, etc. This one was professionally run, so we're getting the boot so they can open more hourly rooms (which obviously make a lot more money)

It sucks because there are a lot of bands in this town and not a lot of places to play. It's gonna be all pro/semi-pro bands getting hurt too, because we're the ones with the cash flow and organization to rent monthly.

The major advantage wasn't really the actual jams, it was storing the gear! We have a lot of large, heavy, expensive gear that we like setup in exactly the right way. That's why we had a monthly room. They're offering us storage space, but I know most of you guys wouldn't want to leave your gear in a shared room with a bunch of other people's stuff

Anyway I just felt the need to rant slightly. Hopefully we can find something before then, as we have a spring tour coming up that we'll need to rehearse for.

Bummer. That really sucks.

I know that a number of bands and jam groups around here rent mini-storage places. There is poor environmental control, but some have even been permitted to install AC units and/or space heat. One place will even remove walls to make a bigger space.

But, they are usually located where noise complaints aren't a problem and they have pretty good security.

Band in high school that I was in rented one of the large ones (that are typically used for a car + some room). They let us install a mini space heater in the winter, and a small A/C unit in the summer. It already had one wall outlet in it too. Worked well! Then it went under new management, and they drove the rates way up.

I don't think I'd want a storage space around here, it's about -10 C right now

Could be worse. You could be losing your space jam. That's the crowd favorite.
