they're not dead. ...claire might be, but we don't know yet, in addition to the characters who did die on the island (boone, what's her name, ana lucia, libby, charlie, etc.)
the island has something to do with time travel, in a sense: one's consciousness travels back from the island to the past, seemingly at random. we saw this in the super-awesome episode with desmond that revealed this property of the island, and then we saw it again last night with john locke as a boy having drawn smokie and himself (in stick figure form).
how the island "generates" dead people like christian shepherd (as seen in last night's episode, as well as last week's) is anyone's friggin' guess.
the show seems like it's starting to turn the corner, so to speak, as there are only two more seasons left after this one wraps up. the producers say they want to explain all the mysteries of the island, so if that's going to happen (doubt it, though), they're going to have to do a few reveals an episode for the next 32 episodes.
(i.e., start watching with season 5.) |

The black smoke is... vicious living nanotechnology? I don't know. But I love it so. |

(My take. I could be wrong.) |

I watched it last night and that show could have been done in 15 minutes. They need to pick up the pace a bit. |

Plane crash, single survivor. He finds magic beans and has a really drawn out trip.
The final episode will be a rescue boat arriving the day after the crash to find one guy rolling about in a daze and everything that you saw in the series was just his mind tripping

I really like the show...
And the smoke monster isn't a security device its some evil thing that lives on the island... the gates are just how they keep the monster out and when the gate was disabled by alex so the army people could get through it allowed the smoke monsters in...
