Yep, I should have saw it coming. The company was down in sales and had made numerous bad decisions over the past few years. They had just fired a rep of twenty years so the Sales manager could move there and take over his territory. Their excuse was that I had picked up another line to rep on the side. But the reality is my pay had been cut by over thirty thousand in the past four years, and I couldn't survive without other lines.I suspect it was much more about cutting costs.

I don't know what I'm going to do yet, I've been talking to a few other vendors over the past six months and was one of three picks for a real good line about a month ago that I didn't get. But the market is certainly looking bleak.

Seems to that picking up more lines like you were doing on the side should/could become your main source of income.

Good luck.

FWIW, Yep, gotta make a move when things aren't getting better even though it may be uncomfortable, especially since your income had been going down for the past four years.

Well you can still stretch unemployment to 77 weeks...I say you chill for a few months while it is still summer, get a beach chair for the yard and a small hibatchi grill, cook a few tri tips, pound a few brews...etc...after all, you've already been working most of your adult life.

I see your from Michigan, no surprise there! Join the crowd! I've been laid off since June of 2009. Still have about 23 weeks of unemployment insurance left as I've been working part-time and not claiming every week. My buddy just got laid off from Borders. . .

I'm so sorry to hear this Burke! You've been around, so I know you will land on your feet. Take a day or two, play out some of your blues on that sweet Sadowsky of yours. Take care, and God Bless!

Sorry to hear it. I got laid off about 2 years ago. Hadn't been without a job in 25 + years. I survived 3 rounds of cuts. It sucks.

Fortunately I found a job a little over a year into the layoff. I had to move to Parker, CO with the family but despite the financial hardship (house was on the market forever, moving costs a fortune, new company didn't pick up the tab, etc...).

Everything sucked for a while but now my family loves Colorado and things have worked out great.

Good luck to you man. Play on.

Oh man- that sucks. I hope that you find something soon. I know it is really tough out there.

I learned something a long time ago - if you think that there is a chance you are going to get fired/laid off - then you probably will - and it is best to prepare for it. I wish I had known that sooner.

Hopefully, I'm fifty-three and I must admit I'm not in the mood to retool. I should have a better handle on things by late tomorrow.

Best of luck finding a new job. Perhaps you can apply your skills in another industry that similar?

Sorry to hear about this. I was laid off from January 22, 2009 until March 3, 2010 so I know all too well how you feel. (I'm also from Michigan).

Keep the Faith, try to find the good and get involved with positive things. When I was laid off I did volunteer work a few days a week at a local hospital in the Oncology department helping the cancer patients. Talk about feeling like you did something worth while with your day!! That really helped to lift my mood and stopped me from worrying about things.

I'm sorry you have been put in this position.

Send me a PM if you feel like it. My relative is Ken Abrames, and I'm sure you are familiar with the book Striper Moon. I don't know him well but I may be able to put you in contact with him. He is over here on the east coast.
