She's got a 172,000 violin. But rides a bus that touts $1 fares? You've got to be kidding me.

That's nothing. This moron left a 3.5 MILLION DOLLAR strad cello outside and it got stolen and almost ended up as a CD rack!

It's why I buy a decent new instrument, I could not stand to lose a classic bass. I'll play something I can replace somewhat easily.

It's possible it was a loaned instrument. A friend of mine plays violin and while he was in college had a one that was on loan to him from the school. He was back on winter break and we were at a holiday gig and he was doing something, like looking through music, or something like that. I asked if he wanted me to hold his violin for him while he did it and he was like "I'd rather you not, it's not that I don't trust you, it's just that this is on loan to me and it's $130,000 violin"

I would let me hold it either!

That totally sucks for the girl that lost it.

The article explains it was a loaned instrument. For those who can't click on the link, here is a cut and paste...

PHILADELPHIA — Police are asking for the public's help recovering a rare violin worth $172,000 that was left on board a Boston-to-Philadelphia bus by a groggy music student from Taiwan.

Philadelphia police say the instrument was left in an overhead bin on a Megabus late Tuesday.

Muchen Hsieh (moo-SHEHN' SHEE'-uh) tells KYW-TV she noticed she didn't have the violin after getting picked up by the family hosting her visit to the Philadelphia area. She called the bus company but was told the instrument hadn't been found.

Hsieh says a Taiwanese culture foundation lent her the violin as she studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston. It was made in 1835 by Vincenzo Jorio in Naples.

Lt. John Walker says the instrument can be returned to Philadelphia police, no questions asked.

I know it was on loan. I'll be damned if I loan out a $172,000 instrument.

I thought a friend leaving a $2800 PRS guitar on the back seat of a taxi was bad enough, (he did get it back), this is in a different league altogether

I read some story about a student from California putting a loaned Strad from his school on top of his car and forgot it when he drove off. It was returned to the school some 10 years later.

Damn! I would dummy cord it to their bodies. Like we used to do the Marines who left their rifles or serialized gear unsecured.

Yep. There's been more than a few authentic Strads (not the ones you see on Craigslist ) left in cabs. IIRC, Yo Yo Ma left a Strad cello in a taxi.

I just remembered when I left my bow in its case on a bus in Japan. I got it back 20 min later, and its was only a $100 bow, but still.

I think it may have to do with classical string instruments. You never hear of a tubist loosing their ****.

Still it happened to be a string instrument technically. It wasn't nearly as bad as loosing a 170 grand violin, but I still lost it. I dunno, I guess its kinda surprising how easy it is to loose them.

Overhead racks were not meant for infants, or instruments of value. Please!
