Ever notice how extremely fashionable it is for people to use terms like "groupthink" and "sheeple" when discussing how independent one's own thoughts are?

*LOL* +1

Also, I always shake my head a little bit when people use the word "Groupthink" to describe macro-level behavior when it's actually a theory by Janis with a very specific set of definitions that's only relevant to micro-level behavior, specifically, group decision-making.

In all seriousness, I've never liked the word "sheep" or "sheeple". I always thought that it lacked originality (no irony intended); and generally, I'd rather people just be individuals rather than spend all of their time trying to convince me that they are individuals.

My college roommate once had a professor open a semester by pointing out how, if you look out across campus, you can see hundreds and hundreds of people, all trying very hard to look like individuals, and all ending up looking exactly like everybody else. Everyone wants to be different and unique but hardly anyone really is...

Which is why (this professor continued) it's a good idea to take a class where you learn how to compose in classical Greek.

I was putting Christmas lights on my house over the weekend. First it was my wife with repeititious suggetions about how she thought I could do things better. Finally I had to tell here to "stop helping" or be quiet. Then several of my neighbors hung around and made reptitious sugguestions. I guess people think if they make the same suggestion enough times while I am trying to work that I will succumb to their wisdom. This is one case where too many suggestions are not only annoying but a hinderence.

I call that "too many cooks in the kitchen" and yes, it is infuriating.

When people do that to me I offer to let them do it themselves in a very grim voice and that usually makes them wander off somewhere else - or in the case of an extremely stubborn exgf from way back, take me up on the offer and then ruin what I was doing after I relinquished the task to her. That girl would call ANY bluff no matter how in-over-her-head she was..... ugh.
