Lou Holtz - why is he on ESPN?

His "pep talk" bit that he does is painful to watch. I feel embarassed for him everytime they show it. Same for the "court" things they added this year along with Mark May. Just awful.

All he does is say ND will win. He said ND would be back in the BCS in 2 years before a coach was even hired. He is even more biased than Herbie.

Anywhere gameday goes he is picked on for his lisp.

Am I the only one that thinks he does not belong on TV? I never thought I would say this but, can we have Trev Alberts back?

Holtz was a great coach, but he's completely out of touch now. He just comes off as some crazy, senile old man.

I love to yell at the screen when he's on. Comic relief, and therapy I guess. That whole thing when he was defending Charlie Weiss was priceless.

He picked up at least two 9-3 seasons for one of my alma maters, South Carolina. He was a great coach, but his main attraction in TV sports is his personality. Shows benefit from personalities that people love and love to hate. In that sense, he is earning his money.

So are you guys saying he is the bearded lady of College Gameday?? He really has zero contributions to the show itself. I don't love or hate him, I just feel bad for him.

I think SoonerMatt got it right crazy senile old man. Sure hope they don't try to bring in Bobby Bowden or JoePa.

Lou Holtz was great at turning programs around, but he didn't mind cutting corners to do it either:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Holtz

He's the last remnant of Notre Dame's glory days. He may be crazy but everyone knows that and no one takes him seriously. I think he's there more for the sentiment that Notre Dame fans have for him rather than for the actual content of what he says. I think he does have a good knowledge of the game its just that he cannot help himself when it comes to talking about the Irish.

Once you're done with this, please explain the reason that Dick Vitale has any work. Is there anyone in sports broadcasting more annoying that Dick Vitale?

Once again, people that listeners love to hate are good for ratings.

Because he's AWESOME BABY. I think it all comes down to wanting someone who actually has a personality and has a passion for the game. I'm not a huge Dick Vitale fan but I'd listen to him call a game any day over Joe Buck. I know Buck comments on different sports but he's completely lifeless.

THIS.

The whole ND implosion thing after he talked them up so much at the beginning has been good for a laugh though.

I'm a ND fan and respect Lou for what he did while he was there but I do agree that he needs to stop pushing the Kool-aid so hard. He just can't bring himself to admit that Notre Dame isn't what they once were.

I was thinking ESPN is trying to hang on to some of the older viewers and attract some more by having Holtz on the show. Most of the newer generation of CFB fans only know him as that "crazy old man", while the older folks remember the glory days at Arkansas, ND, and SC.
