It's happened before.
Will it happen again to conserve fuel?
Discuss
I am hoping this doesn't go into the political realm. Just asking for thoughts. |

I just got my pernit on Thursday and I cannot go the speed limit. I'm always 10 over. Although there isn't that much to worry about on these country roads, but still. |

I drive the back roads, Hell, I even avoid the 401 and other 400 series highways in favor of back roads. |

I think the only difference will be the amount on your speeding ticket if you get caught. Most people still drive the same. |

If this is meant to conserve fuel it's painting with way too broad a brush IMO. If I get 30+ mpg at 60 and someone else chooses to drive a gaz guzzler, I have to slow down to compensate for that? |

There are better things than this to conserve fuel.

America is in a hurry, has been for a while, and will not slow down. Lowering speed limits will just be an exercise in futility.

It's not illegal to drive a gas guzzler if you want to - you simply have to pay the bills. And the speed limits in the US should NOT be written down to force people to use less gas; as long as it's legal to drive the car, then as long as i'm willing to buy the gas, I should be able to do so. I could drive a Hummer 55 and not get the gas mileage my 280ZX gets driving 80. Where's the sense in that???
Speed limits should be set for reasons of safety. Studies have shown that 80% of the traffic in any area moves at a similar, reasonable rate of speed for traffic and conditions, regardless of the speed limit. For example, even if the speed limit is 55, traffic on I-25 in northern Denver moves a consistent 65 - I see it every time I go down there. That's what counts - and that's how speed limits should be set.
All lowering the speed limits will do is rebuild the radar/laser detector industry and put more fine money in the pockets of local courts.

America is in a hurry, has been for a while, and will not slow down. Lowering speed limits will just be an exercise in futility. | Doing 55 in the high speed lane around here usually gets you the "you're #1" salute.
Funny thing for me. I travel a route that takes you past the off ramp to get to the state police barracks. Every once in a while the traffic will catch up to a state cruiser doing 55. Everybody slows right down. People in the rear start switching lanes (only two) until they notice. As soon as he exits the highway everybody takes off again. It's actually kind of funny because you know there are some really stressed out drivers out there. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
