Mac OS X Lion

Sign in to disble this ad
So the newest mac OS is out and I'm just curious if anyone here is using it yet and their thoughts on it.

I'm thinking of upgrading but I'm a little hesitant since Snow Leopard has been rock solid for me and I have a four year old white macbook. Hard to justify upgrading something that works just fine, but then again it is only $30.

Yay? Nay?

Discuss.

And keep the windows vs apple to a bare minimum

i'm still on leopard, will have to either go to store to buy snow leopard upgrade so i can download lion, wait for lion to become available on hard copy, or not upgrade

i'll likely wait a bit to see whether lion will ever be available on hard copy, from what i gather now, it won't

It will, on a USB stick.

One absolute major drawback with lion for me is the absence of Rosetta. I still run a couple of PPC applications that I can't live without.

I'll stick to Snow Leopard until someone come up with a solution.

On a sad note: my 8 year old G5 just died on me.
8 years of loyal service , that pretty good for a computer in these days.

I'm still rocking Snow Leopard. Considering Lion, but I think my Macbook is on its last legs, and I'm not sure how it would react to an OS upgrade.

I'm considering the upgrade as well. I have what I believe to be a '08 model white MacBook, it came with leopard and is currently running snow leopard.
Both have been solid OS's, I just don't know how far I can take it with the OS upgrades until it causes an issue.

I'm sticking with Snow Leopard for a now. There is no major release OS release (Windows or Mac) that ships perfect. Give it a few months and I'm sure it'll be schweet. Not saying that Lion is uber buggy or anything but I'd put money one Snow Leopard being faster and more stable for the time being.

A little off topic, is it just me or is does new OSX release and Mac software product have less color than it's previous incarnation. Two or three versions ago, the iTunes sidebar (with the playlists and such) had colored icons, now it doesn't. OSX Lion's Finder sidebar has gone greyscale as well. Lions highlight (when you're in menus) is deeper and less vibrant. And I'm noticing it other places too but those are the instances that immediately come to mind. Apple, please don't take away the pretty colors .

I did the upgrade and apart from some older software now not working it's pretty cool.

Stuff takes longer to load, but once it's loaded it seems to run faster. The multiple desktops work well as does the 'two finger' swiping on my touch pad (Macbook Pro).

Worth $30 IMHO.

I love the fact that the "family network" allows me to load Lion on all 4 of my macs for only $30.

Don't know if it's a placebo effect, but I think it's definitely faster running apps. One gotcha is that the scroll effect on the magic mouse is now reversed to mimic the iOS swipe behavior.

My housemate got it yesterday. We're all mac users so I guess I'll find out off him if it's any good. If it's worth it I'll probably get it.

Change that in setting by unselecting 'scroll direction natural'

I am one system behind so I'd need to upgrade and then upgrade so $60. My Mac is the lowest possible to run Lion so...we'll be getting a new 21" iMac instead :-)

I think I will give the "reverse" scroll a week of tryout. The idea that you move the content (versus scrolling the window) makes sense.

I loaded it on my Air yesterday. No problems. It still looks and feels like OS X.

Lots of new gesture options on the track pad. And Mission Control looks like it could be helpful.

Seeing that it's not my main computer, I don't have a lot on it. The only thing that didn't work was a really old ProTools driver (I had it on there to use with an old Mbox). During the install process, the system says what it won't be compatible with. It puts that software in a separate directory.

It could be my imagination (or the new install just getting rid of some crap) but the computer seems to run a little faster.

I'd say it was worth the $30.

Need to wait another month or so until ProTools 9 is made compatible with it. Had to do the same with Snow Leopard. Once Avid gives the go ahead then I will grab it from the Mac App store.

Later
Rob
