Macbook Pro slow Internet problems?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a Macbook pro and it's about 4 years old. I'm running Leopard on it.

The wireless internet connection has become extremely slow. All of my roommates have PC's and their connection is 392874920 times faster than mine.

Does anybody know anything about this problem, or how to fix it?

Maybe they are using up all the bandwidth. Take control of the router and boot all their IP addresses and see if your speed improves.

What is the strength and bit rate of the wireless signal you are connecting to? Is it slow on a wired connection as well?

Airport Express cards have excellent range. If you really have problems with yours in comparison to run-of-the-mill PCs, it could be a voltage error. You can reset your SMC by removing the battery, unplugging the power supply and then holding the power button for ten seconds. It saved my butt once when my MBP wouldn't charge anymore.

Otherwise, it's a mysterious issue and I have no answer

Yea... Mine can't charge anymore either. I'll try it but.... Should I be worried about things happening to files on my computer if i do this?

No need to worry if you've got everything properly backed up. If you haven't, then yes, you should worry. But that applies to any computer user who doesn't back up data.

BACK UP YOUR DATA! First rule of IT.

No, the only thing it does is clear your computer's SMC settings, which restores them to safe factory settings. SMC controls the fans' response to temperature and the like.

I'll chime in. The last update on my MBP (yesterday or the day before) has obliterated wireless networking. It can't detect known networks even though they still exist in the Keychain, and if I connect to the network, there's no inbound traffic happening.

I'll keep you informed on what can be done.

Yeah, I've tried a lot of these things and it hasn't really done much to help. I wonder if it's a problem with Leopard, since I don't really remember this being a problem when I was using Tiger, or whatever it was called that came before it....
