Major Computer Logon Problem

Sign in to disble this ad
My first major problem with any computer I've owned. I already took the machine to Circuit City and they ran a diagnostic on it and according to them I have a Windows XP corruption.

Basically, I'm stuck on the Welcome Screen when coming from hibernation mode. If I click on my logon icon, the computer will begin to log me on, then quick take me back to the logon screen. This occurs no matter if I turn the computer off or come from hibernation mode. I've tried rebooting in safe mode which does nothing. My next step is to replace the battery on the motherboard (someone recommended this). I have my doubts this will work.

I've already tried to reboot the computer with the System Restore DVD in the optical drive and this does absolutely nothing.

Circuit City wants $130 to reformat the hard drive which will wipe out the memory anyway.

Looking for any suggestions, am I SOL and need a new computer or is something else I can try? It's not the greatest computer (Emachines), but I've had absolutely no problems with it until last week.

Thanks for your help, probably won't have Internet access until tomorrow when I'm at work.

Check you computer's BIOS/setup to see what order the bootup devices are. You may need to change the order of devices to give the CDROM priority over the hard drive when booting.

Sounds like you need a good, old fashioned reformat and reinstall. You should have a standard XP installation DVD to boot from.

What happens when you boot from the System Restore DVD? Any questions?

I ended up using the restore DVD to reinstall Windows XP. I had most of my files backed up on an external hard drive. Hopefully it doesn't happen again; really annoying to have to change settings all over again.
