Major Flooding Here In The Northeast

Sign in to disble this ad
This is a little parking lot a few houses down from my hill:

This is what it looks like today:

The waterfall that's now there is running into a gigantic hole that formed from the flooding- it's like 15 feet down. The stairwell has now collapsed.

This is the nice little stream that runs behind my and my neighbor's houses:

It's now a mini river that has knocked down this house's retaining wall (we live on a hill, so most houses have a stone retaining wall for their yard):

Crazy stuff. My finished basement's carpet completely flooded, but we're pretty lucky compared to some. We never see flooding like this around here.

we had a sinkhole in Charlton a year ago that was CRAZY deep...like almost 20 feet. It was detoured for 4 weeks. That stuff is scary man. It's been ridiculous around here, indeed.

It's crazy over here in NJ. The Passaic and Pequannock Rivers both overflowed and destroyed hundreds of home during last week's storm. Now we're getting dumped on with rain again and the rivers are expected to crest yet again.

We haven't gotten any serious flooding here. The wetlands around the property are holding most of the water. Yard has some large puddles that form every time it rains. The little stream that leads out of the pond looked more like a waterfall this morning, and all the water draining off the field was just adding to it. Basement has really good drainage under it, so luckily we don't have to worry about water in the house. I'm not sure about our rental house in New Britain though. It's placed conveniently at the bottom of a hill and there's always water in the basement when it rains. The sump pump helps a lot though. Only strange thing here at home was the pipe my dad had put about 7 feet underground last summer to run electricity to the barn was filled with water. He saw water dripping from the cover to a box section of the pipe, and when he unscrewed it water was pouring out. Luckily he wired it all up with waterproof cable.

We're getting slammed yet again... maybe not as bad as new England but nonetheless I'm buzzed from 3 beers and a whole lot of Cp Morgans Spiced Rum and I've become frightengly adept at wielding a shop vac to sop up water in the basement.
anyone remember the pics I posted two or so weeks ago? This is becoming a habit!

Sorry to hear about all the crappy weather you guys are getting. Seems like there is ALWAYS a huge low parked right over the north east.

In Norwich, between the two casinos. It's apparently going to get up near 80 degrees by the end of the week too, so they're combining hot and rainy, my two most hated weather conditions

I need to move to Alaska.

I know the area! Hot and rainy in New England is nothing like hot and rainy in Florida. I'd love to go to Alaska. I have some customers there and I have an open invite. I just need about 3 weeks off.

One of my students in Long Island has been pumping water (and using a shop vac) out of his basement for some time now, and last I heard the water was winning.

The yard here has filled with water, but nothing in the house thankfully.

Sadly, no one noticed or cared. Everyone is too busy sending money to Haiti in order to feel good about themselves to worry about what's going on here.

Route 95 has been entirely shut down near the Providence airport. First time in history the highway has been shut down due to rain. It's unbelievable. Luckily we're in a high area and our house was built above the water table. Our sump has been working non-stop for three days.

Six inches of water in my basement. We've been in this house for five years and never had a drop down there. The fire department is coming to pump it out.

Oh well, at least we can throw away all of the crap I've been after my wife to get rid of for years now!

Been vacuuming and pumping water for two days! And I live in the highest spot in town but, it's all built on ledge!

I have been pumping for the past 24 hours. I have a couple of carpets in the basement which will have to be thrown out. I went through the same thing during the Mother's Day 2006 floods. Once this is done, I have to see about getting a sump pump installed.

hang in there guys. sorry to hear about your troubles. i am no stranger to flooded basements. last spring, after our big flood, i had a creek in mine for two weeks. it goes away. takes some of your foundation with you, but it goes away. just be careful driving; flooded roads can fool you.

I always get a bit of water through the slab of my old house and this has been no exception - but no damage. Glad to hear Bryan and AJ are pretty dry but 6 inches is a major pain, Kevin, hopefully your furnace and hot water heater are OK. The news reports out of RI and southeastern Mass are like nothing I can remember.

Thanks, Dan. Hot water heater and furnace are OK. The fire department came yesterday. The pump they had was rated at 350gpm. They were here for about an hour!

Of course, since I've never had water in the basement, I didn't have a sump pump. I checked just about everywhere in Southeastern MA and RI-all sold out. Luckily, my stepdaughter lives in Boston and the Home Depot there had plenty in stock. She brought it down last night and we were good to go. Now it's wet-vac time, and then major junk removal. Good times.
