I took these photos with an older HP camera so the shots aren't that great.
This happened two summers ago. Me and my wife lived in the 3rd (top) floor unit of this here building. With the windows open I could hear someone gunning their engine. No sooner do I think "this drunk needs to slow down" (25 MPH in my hood) then I hear tires screeching and a horrific, building shaking crash. I look down from the window and see the top of this Blazer with the entire front end in the building. He hit the unit 3 floors directly below us. Pretty scary.
An elderly woman lived in this unit and was at her door to go out and smoke a cigarette. The doors are in the back of the units so she was far away from the impact. We joked that it was one of the few instances were you could say that smoking may have saved a life.
Apparently the driver passed out behind the wheel, stepped on the gas and yanked on the wheel in the process. He jumped the curb, barely missed a tree stump and careened into our building.
He seemed dazed but alright after the crash. He told my wife he had been drinking a little. They took him to the hospital to be on the safe side, perhaps to gather evidence or make him take a BAC. I really don't know as we didn't hear anything about it after the incident.
A tow truck came and hauled the heap out of there and the brick was redone. They put the lady up in a hotel for the duration. We have since moved into a bigger unit on the second floor . |
