Jailed for cashing Chase check at Chase bank | KING5.com Seattle Quote:
Buying his own home was a big accomplishment for construction worker, Ikenna Njoku, of Auburn. He’s only 28 years old.
Njoku qualified for the first time home buyer rebate on his tax return.
Njoku signed up to have the rebate deposited directly into his Chase Bank account. But when the IRS rebate arrived, there was a problem. Chase had closed Njoku’s account because of overdrawn checks in the past. The bank deducted $600 to cover what he owed them and mailed him a cashier’s check for the difference--$8,463.21.
But when Njoku showed up at the Chase branch near his house intending to cash the check, he was in for a nasty surprise.

I don't understand why he couldn't afford the impound fees once the check was recognized as legitimate and he got out of jail. Maybe they still didn't let him cash it right away?

| | | | Hopefully he will sue the heck out of them. I bank with chase and have had a similar experience with them. I had a large check that I deposited into an atm on Friday. Was given credit and 5 days later, Tuesday, they took the amount back out of my account and therefore caused overdrafts. It was a check from the State of Ca. I was told that it looked "suspicious" and they would mail me back the check, (which they did) and then I was to hand it to a teller IN PERSON for re deposit.
I called the corporate office (their customer service department were useless) and raised holy h**l. I was given a "temporary credit" and all overdraft charges were dropped.
I never got a letter of apology....I got a personal call from the secretary to the vice president. She told me of fraud perpetrated on chase and the "Fonts" on the check looked wrong?
Unbelievably stupidity.

Maybe Chase bank is just full of idiots. Every time something like this happens to someone who happens to be black, that doesn't mean it's racism.
Maybe this dude should get Sharpton or the ACLU. If there's a case you can bet they'll take it.

If you think this would of happened to a white male in a suit....you would be wrong. The police dept also faces some liability in this issue.

There's a good chance it DOES happen to white people, but they just aren't as quick to raise hell and play the race card.

Do you really believe that the cops are in cahoots with this bank to discriminate against this guy because he's black? I wonder if any of the cops were black or any of the man's jailors? Why is this guy not already suing someone? It's been a year or better right?

I know where that Chase branch is. Maybe I'll dress up like a black guy and go try and cash a check to see what happens.
