It's not about the smoke - its about his statement "i was trying to light my shoes on fire".

If I was the Air Marshall, I would have made the guy into a neat package with zip ties so he could be easily carried off the plane, amusing all the passengers that had to put up with his stupidity. |

This screams hysterical racism all over it. |

This screams hysterical racism all over it. | Yes indeed. If the shoe bomber and underwear bomber and the 911 hijackers were white guys, this wouldn't be an issue at all |

He said, "Don't worry, it's not a bomb." The plane made an emergency landing in Denver and he was arrested. That's what happens when you joke about explosives on an airplane.

And it's up to the Air Marshall to make such a call?? I'd prefer they er on the side of arresting/detaining and subduing the stupid asshat. |

Regarding the Qatari guy it sounds like the expected reaction considering recent events. I'm glad that marshalls are gettng on top of these types of things. We know for a fact that terrorists are trying to take down planes using small personal bombs. When a dude goes into the bathroom and then smoke is smelled and the guy doesn't cooperate with air marshalls that should absolutely be taken seriously. Paying extra attention when it's a guy from the middle east just makes sense. So far it hasn't been white guys trying to blow up planes. Pull your head out.

You have to consider that at the point they were called, I doubt anyone knew it was some idiot "smoking a fag" in the bathroom. |

Can anyone say overreaction. |

Can anyone say overreaction. | After what has happened recently? No...you can't NOT overreact with this type of thing.
Like I said, this is why I stay off of airplanes...
