....as most of the regulars know here, I'm about as non-religious as it gets, but I actually am very supportive of others beliefs, as long as they don't "inflict" them on anyone else.

This story is just unbelieveable, and I hope that the perpetrator faces the fullest measure of justice for the attack he committed yesterday:

http://news.aol.com/article/police-s...525x1200339746

My wife is the Director of Religious Education at our local UU Church, and knows several people that are members of this church. Thankfully none of them was harmed, but sadly, two people, one of which is a true "hero" in every sense of the word, have died because of the actions of one very messed up person.

Of all religious groups, the UU's have shown to me to be the most open, fair, thoughtful, helpful, and genuinely caring toward all (they accept me, and I'm agnostic!). My wife and I were married by our local UU minister, and despite my reputation as being anti-religious, I have nothing but respect for the UU Church and all it stands for, as they discriminate against no one - including arch conservatives like the individual that blamed his troubles (which were almost certainly self-inflicted) on them and tried to exact revenge on people that would have given whatever they had to help him, had he just asked.

This is a sad, sad thing.

Really awful, sounds like it was political as well as religious.

Sucks. Thank god (I'm agnostic too) for the brave soul who sacrificed his life for the safety of others. Because of him maybe many survived. Very sad story.

He - "pulled a shotgun from a guitar case"

You see, I've had a policeman get nervous when he saw my bass in a molded Fender hardcase in the passenger seat area.

BTW - When the officer says "is that a guitar" I would recommend you say "Yes, a bass guitar" ...as I learned - not the time to split hairs by responding "no, it's a bass..."

powerlessness is a diffi-cult sensation to experience.

Wow... what an awful story. The political ****ing contest taking place below the article only leads me to believe that this will probably happen again in the future so long as extremists still get a kick out of telling eachother that they're wrong...

please, please, please stop calling this guy a conservative. He was on food stamps. Conservatives don't believe in food stamps, let alone use them. In reading further it sounds to me like he was a racist, bigoted, wife-beating browneye who hated everybody. Calling guys like this an "arch-conservative" is like calling Stalin an "arch-liberal"... and please stop calling him mentally ill. He wasn't that either. Just a completely and utterley despicable human being.

I still have an ancient AOL account I haven't discarded yet. The stupidity displayed by most of the commenters/posters (all over the political spectrum) on AOL's boards is profoundly depressing.
