I just finished reading this story after a friend sent it to me. Totally bizarre tale! Deadspin has been reliable in the past IME, but this is just so crazy that it's hard to believe right off the bat despite the links, research, etc.

Notre Dame has issued a statement claiming T'eo was the victim of this hoax: http://www.businessinsider.com/notre...of-hoax-2013-1

But T'eo has said the two met in person on several occasions.

LOL...someone either hacked the girl's fake twitter account or the owner is now messing with Te'o:

Yep...pretty hard to claim you were duped when you've already been caught lying.

Yeah...pretty hard to believe someone would go that far to bolster their heisman status (which I would assume was the intent). Not saying I'd put it past a Div I university but this kid seemed to be a good guy so definitely didn't see it coming.

If this is true this has to be the weirdest story I have ever heard in connection to college football.

I don't think that a University or a player would lie about something like this simply because they have to know they would be found out sooner or later. Especially a high profile. Unless of course the person was extremely unstable which T'eo does not strike me as. Notre Dame would certainly not want to tarnish their reputation after the last couple of years.

I didn't hear anything about his so-called girlfriend until I read this story. Granted, I'm no ND fan, but I watch a lot of college football so I'm surprised I didn't know about this.

Wow, after reading the whole story, wow. I don't even know what to say or who to believe this has to be one of the strangest things I have ever read.

Pretty wild that this could happen and be perpetrated for so long at a major institution. I wonder if other journalists fail to check their sources the way all these sports columnists did? Nah, everything else in the News is always 100% true.

I've only loosely followed this but man, if true... what an incredibly narcissistic, sociopathetic act.

I would REALLY hate for that to be my 15 minutes...
