Which would imply the findings should be reversed.

Some couples are happier then others. I would never go to the doctor for regular check ups if I didn't have a wife.

Yeah I always ignore these kind of things.

I only have to look at my uncle and aunt. 36 years married, stangely enough never been happy. They have 3 kids, live in a big house but they fight each and every single day. No idea why they are still together (well.. from my uncle I know he said it was cause of a financial problem, worst excuse ever), but they don't share any happiness at all..

So what does being married add in this case?

Humans are social animals.

Probably better off around others, even if you're not madly in love with them.

There are exceptions, of course. Some people will absolutely thrive all by themselves.

Correlation doesn't equal causality. It could be that people who are predisposed to live longer, are also more likely to get married -- possibly because they are more likely to be selected as spouses.

And divorced men live even shorter yet...

I know the BS I put up with combined with the court ordered support has not been healthy ....

My in-laws were the same way. Married for almost 60 years, were constantly at each other's throats until my Father-in-law died a couple of years ago. Basically they took their vows of "until death do we part" pretty seriously, because by rights they should have divorced years ago. Sixty years of being in an unhappy marriage? Nowadays we wouldn't tolerate it!

This thread makes me think of the old classic:

Q. Why do married men usually die before their wives?
A. Because they want to...

You all condemning marriage in order to be happy is 100% proportionate to how much I think it utterly sucks to be single, dumb-ass studies be damned.

As a single male, I tend to partake in more dangerous activities like skydiving, scuba diving, and riding a motorcycle. I'm trying to get it out of the system before I meet a girl who has the implied right to veto these decisions.

I've heard people say this for years, and though I do not know whether or not it is true, it makes perfect sense. At least if you look at the extremes of the loneliness of being single and the happiness of being married.

I've heard a lot of stories about elderly people dying, and their spouses dying very shortly afterward, too. That's a bit far-fetched to me, however.

My grandpa was at D day and fought in WWII for a few years. After that he lived on the coast and would walk the beach 5-10 miles a day , never smoked and stayed in good physical shape. Seven years ago his wife of 60 years and my grandma died of cancer. He gave up after that, stopped doing anything and had to go to a home. He just sat there watching tv and pissing his pants and died within a year. Had she not died i think he would have lived longer.

I also perfer to be in a relationship, been single 6 months and I dont perfer it.

A recent sociology study also showed that men who do more cleaning around the house don't get laid as much.

I go to the doctor when I think I might die. And when my wife nags me.
