When I was in my early teens in the 70s there was a TV show late on Friday nights called "In Concert." One of the bands I saw on the show that impressed me the most was the Isley Brothers. I particularly remember Ernie Isley smoking away on guitar on "Machine Gun" and the rest of the band grooving behind him. That was a formative moment in my mind, learning about how a band comes to sound like a band.
Right now … I'm paying attention to the bass line on "That Lady" more deeply than usual. |

I remember when Jimi Hendrix backed them up on the guitar, which soon opened the door for Ernie to step in, along with Marvin and Jasper. I have to say they were probably my most influential band, period. Just the other day... well I just checked and realized that I still have the Funky Family C.D. in my C.D. player. I was up late the other night playing Marvin's bass lines, funkin' them up and groovin'. Well, I just found out about this just moments ago about Marvin's passing. My prayers are with him and his family. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
