Hi.

A bit of background.

I have a lot of stuff. At least compared with some others, and according to my GF, way too much .

About 400m3, ~10000 or so items ~100 pallets. So not THAT much, but too much for my memory.

About a year ago when I moved and had to pack and move 'em, it became pretty obvious that even though I did remember 99% of the stuff I had, the location was a mystery (being 40 does that to Ya ). I have been thinking about a storage software for a few years now, but as I lived 10 years in that last location, I didn't quite need one, I pretty much always found what I needed (I still remember their former location even after a year). I did start one catalog in Excel, but as it didn't quite work for me, after the HD crash I didn't recreate it.

It's a bit different now, since I had to pack in a relative hurry, and everything is mixed up in several buildings and vehicles. I'm in a process of organizing my storage areas so cataloging everything seems like a good idea at this point.

That's why I once again turn to You, my fellow TBers. Someone has to know a program that preferably has the following searchable storing parameters.

1. Location, by name/group/code
2. Content(s) of that said location
3. Pic(s) of the item(s) in that specific location
4. Cross-searchable tags as: spares for XX, for sale in YY, in auction, NOS, unused, broken, etc.
5. Every item has to be easily re-assignable to an existing location.

The OS will most likely to be either XP or Ubuntu.

I do know of several manufacturing scale softwares, but those are IME too complex and heavy for such a simple task.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Regards
Sam

Sam,

I have something I did several years ago in Access that will apply. I haven't used it in a long time, but if you have Access and would like, I'll pull it out of the software archive and share.

The easiest way I have found is to put everything onto .txt files and then keep them all in a single directory (folder). If I needed to search for something, I would just open the directory (folder), Ctrl + F to search the keyword to locate the actual .txt it is in. Open the .txt file, Ctrl + F and search the keyword again.

Thanks. I haven't used Acess since the stone ages (a several PC meltdowns ago), but I think I still have the Access installation CD somewhere, so that would be a great help.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that approach doesn't quite give the flexibility I'd like. I noodled around with something similar with DOS while in Poly a few decades ago, and as soon as we got a better software, the DOS version was ditched.
