I was watching a show on this and it got me pondering what others thought caused their disappearance.

They also were assimilated into many other cultures as well. That happened with the Toltecs. They originally built what would become Mexico City, then assimilated into the Aztec culture.
Many, many cultures came and went just like the Maya. Their cultural disappearance is not unusual, nor should it be shocking how little we know of it given their lack of desire to cultivate written history.

...
It is very strange how there are multiple occasions in the history of central america where multiple cities where simultaneously abandoned. And these mass abandonments all coincided with the end of the smaller ~400 yr cycles (baktuns) of their calender.
Not to sound like a nutjob, but I have thought about one thing in particular:
So if their calender runs in ~13000 yr cycles with the summer and winter solstice suns lining up with the milky way at the end of each cycle, what happened in the previous cycle? I think the next 13000 yr cycle is predicted to be one of unity, peace, and enlightenment, while the one we are currently in is one of war, introversion, and confusion.
So was the previous cycle also one of unity and such not? What with all of this advanced ancient knowledge and collosal megaliths it makes me wonder if these are relics of the older cycle. Not that I believe in Atlantis, but a culture similar to that would explain a lot. Did the Mayans look to the end of this cycle as a return to that utopian state of knowledge?
Makes me curious about the next couple years...

Maybe a unicorn or two.
Somehow I doubt it
