i ordered a milk shake with my combo meal at Mcdonalds today. it was too much food so i didn't finish the shake. it is now sitting here at my desk. the thing is no longer frozen and is closer to room temperature now. here is the scarry part, the consistancy of the "milk shake" is the exact same as when it was frozen. , this phenomena is quite disturbing, and i am wondering if the substance that i have consumed is intended for human consumption.
should i go induce vomiting or see a physician?

McDonalds now uses real dairy products in their shakes and they DO NOT stay nice and thick they way their original shakes did when at room temperature. Their new vanilla shakes are yellowish instead of the pure white, like they used to be. I like the old purely fake shakes better than the new ones!

Cecil replies:
Absolutely. But the real shocker is that every McDonald's hamburger contains chopped-up pieces of--brace yourself--dead cow. So let's not get hung up on a little seaweed.
McDonald's milkshakes, along with a great many other products, contain a seaweed extract called carrageenan, which is used as a thickener and emulsifier. (It keeps the butterfat in the shake from separating out.) Carrageenan comes from Irish moss, a red, bushy seaweed that grows on coastal rocks near, among other places, Carragheen, Ireland, whence the name. (You can also find it in Maine, the Canadian maritimes, and various European localities.)
You either collect the stuff on the beach by hand or use a special long-handled rake. Carrageenan is extracted from the moss with hot water and used in milk-based products, soft drinks (for "body"), gelatin (it's the part that jells), etc. Not all that carcinogenic and what the hell, centuries ago they used it to treat ulcers. So hold your nose and swig away. | Here's the full article: http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a3_097b.html. Funny and educational; you can't beat that! |

| | | If a french dude uses something exotic on food, he is a genius. If Mcdonalds do that, they are evil.
