How far away was the bear? What terrain? Other than your firearm, what other gear do you bring for a short hike like that?

Haha. I had a bit of a laugh when I saw the pic of you holding the shotty. In Australia, there are pretty much no predators large enough to take down a human (well, none that a shotty is going to help you with - it's all snakes, spiders, etc) when we got bushwalking/hiking. I wasn't expecting to see a firearm with you!

I'm guessing that was in case of bear attack or something?

I heard that from another aussie who was supprised as shiat about carrying a gun out here.Ya man...saw 3 bears today. They get such a bad rep though...they ussually dont want nothing to do with us.

I looove not having to worry about snakes, scorpians, etc like there. Here we trudge through bush and that never comes to mind haha.

You do know bears hate noise and will walk away if you get noisy, right?

Read some bush manuals lately from a park guide??

No hate man and your right to a point but 24 years of living amongst bears has proven that wrong time and time again lols.

Bears are also some of the most curious animals around. But like I say..they also get a bad rep and ussually not a prob.Just a matter of if your willing to take that risk...

Nope, I hiked the Appalachian Trail whole.

Brown and black bears are awfully nearsighted. Unless you do something stupid like grabbing a mom's cub or hitting one, they'll avoid human presence and walk away from anything that seems bigger than they are.

Over the years, that worked with two people holding their arms up, one person holding a big branch and one again holding his own backpack beside him.

First one this season? I'm going to the store later. If I encounter any bicycle couriers, I'm going to make a lot of noise and hope they go about their way. If not...blammo. Last week one gave me no choice. I started to take some photos, but the cops were putting up tape and took my camera. Something about "evidence".

BTW, anyone know the proper way to stuff a bicycle courier? I want him to look as natural as possible. Do you mount the bike, too?

Mike

I think you should stand in their path and inflate your blimp.

Three summers, hiking one third each summer. It's not really one third of the distance every time, though, as you sometimes spend days on rolling hills and yet end on stuff like the Bigelow reserve and the Kathadin, which count for ~7-8,000ft of combined ascent and descent daily, given that you hike around ten miles a day.

A grizz is a whole other thing, I must say. I didn't cross any, but I heard enough about their behavior. Are they frequent in the areas your hike?

Try using glass cloth and polyester resin. If you do it right...

Well, the doorman now is standing next to my front door. Everytime someone rings the doorbell he yells "White Tiger!" (learned it by opening one of those Disney Animatronics). Ah, the look on the face of those Jehovah Witnesses in sunday mornings is priceless.
