| The shelters are filling up with people who had to evacuate their homes. The Mississippi River is around 41 feet, and expected to reach 48. (Flood stage is around 37 feet.) The worst flooding on record around here was in 1937 (I think) when it was 48.7 feet. The Corps of Engineers has blown a few levees in an attempt to save some towns further up river. This has flooded thousands of acres of farm land.
All the casinos are now closed for 3-6 weeks. The communities near water are flooding because all of those tributaries that normally flow into the Mississippi have nowhere to go. Because the Mississippi is so high, the tributaries can't empty into it and are backing up causing lots of flooding. I think we've had something like 12" of rain over the last 10 days. We'll finally get a break starting this afternoon, with no rain expected for about 3 or 4 days. The Mississippi is supposed to crest at 48' on May 10th, and is expected to stay that high for about a week.
Personally, my house isn't in a danger area. My heart just aches for all the people whose homes are being flooded. And all this is on the heels of the worst month of tornadoes I can remember...
