Microsoft Offers $45 billion to buy Yahoo!

That would be quite an acquisition. I suppose Microsoft's goal to "bury" Google might go better if they acquire said search company's single biggest competitor.

These days Yahoo is much more than a search engine. The amount of people using Yahoo for free email has to be very high, probably still higher than Gmail.

That's been Yahoo's philosophy from the beginning, though - they've always wanted to have their fingers in everything. Yahoo News, Yahoo Groups, Yahoo Domain Hosting, etc.

They branched out into all those services very quickly, while Google made it a point to show that they kept their home page a simple search engine for a long time. Now that we're moving into the Google Universe era, though, it's Google's turn to assimilate everything in sight.

Did anyone ever read the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov? Google's mission statement, which is something along the lines of "To categorize all of the world's knowledge" is pretty similar to the goals of the pioneers who were setting out to found the "Galactic Encyclopedia".

That doesn't really relate to anything; I've just always found that interesting.

Yahoo is still the most visited site, so yeah this would be a good idea.

I hate Yahoo's search engine, but I use their email, so I guess it balances out. Wonder how long it would take Microsoft to earn that 45 billion back...

They wouldn't have to earn it back; the assets of Yahoo would then be on Microsoft's balance sheet; the only thing they'll need to make back is the difference between the offered price and the actual value of Yahoo.

I haven't used yahoo in any capacity since '98. Are they still just a web portal, email service, and search engine?

Ah, but you freely paid for the product in a consensual exchange. It's not your money anymore!

I can't stand Yahoo. Google is nice, it's clean, minimal clutter...
Taking out Google would be pretty hard, after all they have Google Earth, YouTube, Google Mail, other cool stuff.

Same with me. I use Yahoo for their mail. That's it. I hate everything else on there. Google's basic search page has been my homepage at work and at home for several years now, and will remain so. If Microsoft does buy Yahoo it looks like I'll be using the GMail account I've had for 3 or 4 years but never used once!.

I have a Yahoo email address that I use when I suspect someone's gonna spam me. But, I can't live without del.icio.us and Flickr is pretty awesome, and they're both owned by Yahoo. Yahoo also supports a lot of open source projects. Sure, del.icio.us and Flickr probably wouldn't be affected much by a buyout, but we all know open source is pretty much anathema to M$, so what would to happen to them?
